Bearing with red circle is what I removed from my own car and GREEN is the updated version 286832.
They are different as you can see in photo.
My question is can this new version be installed and wouldn't it be causing problems down the road?

I would measure how much room you have if the bearing walks to the edge. I don't think it will, but if it does, how much of the oil hole is covered and will it contact the edge of the crank.
Why are you rebuilding the engine?

The engine ran extensively with some type of gearbox oil, it has spun a bearing among other things.

So you'd think this is not ok to use?

The tab in no way controls that type of movement,

I'll look it up at work but the red one is a great brand.
The tab locates the bearing rotationally, and the crush locates it longitudinally.

The color codes typically refer to size and not design. If your crank is sized for a green bearing it is what it is. I am not crazy about the tab design but it looks like a Mahle logo on it and they make good stuff. The red bearing has a Vandervell logo and they are a great bearing maker too.

Are you saying the engine was run with gearbox oil in place of correct motor oil?

It does not look like the overall width of those bearings is the same.
