Dutch GP boss "waiting for clarity" on Zandvoort F1 race's future

Dutch Grand Prix boss Jan Lammers has acknowledged the race is unlikely to keep its 3 May date, but he's still "waiting for clarity" from Formula 1 and the FIA.

In a statement on Friday, F1 made it clear that the 2020 season won't start until the end of May at the earliest in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Australian, Bahrain, Chinese and Vietnam races have all already been formally postponed.

The Dutch government has since put a ban on events with more than 100 people until 31 March, and an extension of a month would include the first two days of the scheduled F1 race weekend.

Efforts are now being made to find a new slot for some of the postponed races, with August the obvious option for the Dutch race at Zandvoort.

With UK soon becoming part of the epicentre it's unlikely F1 circus based there will be travelling anytime soon.

Forget June ,August would be extremely optimistic, even if the warmer temps help.which is not a given.

A good chance no F1 this year.

China GP will definitely not be coming back to the calendar...they’re enforcing a mandatory 2-week quarantine for all travelers at designated quarantine facilities and travelers have to pay for their quarantine stay. No way in hell the F1 circus can or will deal with that...

Unfortunately, looking at the numbers in Spain, Italy, France, etc...i doubt we will have a season this year.

In France, situation is worsening pretty quickly.
We have many of 40-50 years old in intensive care.
Wonder if Chinese authorities told us everything about this virus?
Formula one championship 2020 will be cancelled for sure.

One concern is that while there is (in theory) experience from China, South Korea and Italy (as countries having been hit before), it seems the situation is totally out of control, with new measures released daily apparently without any forward planning.
There is no clue about how / when things will improve in Europe (even Italy is not getting better for the time being, and all other countries follow).

I hope Italy will have first positive outcomes at the end of this week ( two weeks of inertia according to most epidemiologists)
This is the only way to go for all European countries I guess.
Réally hope it won't be a bloodbath for britains ..

Here in the states we're beginning to close all bars and restaurants until the end of the month. The financial impact is going to be crazy and it's going to hit those without savings the hardest. Matt and I generally cook at home almost everyday so it's not that difficult for us, but I can only imagine how many people are going to have to learn how to cook.

They could try to run the minimum 8 races, using just three or four courses. But if audiences won't be there (for whatever reasons) does it make sense to spend the money if it only increases the financial losses? Best to run this year's cars next year, and push the 2021 changes back to...2025...if audiences show any interest in still watching the sport. I personally would be more interested in seeing a return to production car racing...not absurd prototypes that have ruined Le Mans, but fully street legal models pulled from production lines...Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Porsche, Honda, Chevy, Ford, etc., just shove your best engine in your best chassis and show up.

#Ferrarigate: This is the new encrypted Fuel Flow Sensor

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

In light of the events surrounding #FIA-Ferrarigate, the FIA has introduced a second fuel flow sensor for 2020, which cannot be manipulated. F1-Insider.com has the images.

For the 2020 Formula 1 season the German company Sentronics from Mannheim has developed a new encrypted fuel flow meter. The encrypted meter will be used in addition to the existing fuel flow meter, which has been used by all teams throughout the 2018 and 2019 Championships.

Introduced to Formula 1 in 2014, the FIA’s regulation surrounding fuel flow requires teams to keep within a strict maximum instantaneous fuel flow limit of 100kg/hour; monitored by a homologated fuel flow meter providing data to teams and the FIA throughout a race weekend.

Fast-forward to 2017, the supply of the regulatory fuel flow sensor for the 2018 and 2019 seasons was opened up to tender by the FIA, and subsequently awarded to Sentronics Ltd with the FlowSonic Elite fuel flow meter.

Towards the end of the 2019 season, fuel flow regulations were back in the spotlight, with Red Bull seeking clarification over a potential loophole that could be used to circumnavigate fuel flow regulations. The loophole would involve a team forcing a greater amount of fuel through the fuel flow meter than permitted, at intervals in between each of the meter’s 2,200 fuel flow measurements per second.

The FIA declared that this would be illegal.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

While it would be an extremely difficult loophole for any team to exploit for competitive gain, it wasn’t technically impossible. In order to address this and tighten the policing of fuel flow regulations, the FIA released a new technical directive on 20th November 2019, detailing the actions to be introduced for 2020 in order to improve policing of the fuel flow measurement. The directive declared that a secondary flow meter labelled the ‘FIA FFM’ would be introduced for the 2020 season, to be mounted in series after the team device already in use.

The meter would incorporate new features to make it impossible for a team to use more fuel than recorded.

Developed by Sentronics Ltd as an evolution of the FlowSonic Elite flow meter, the new device incorporates anti-aliasing technology and full data encryption. The anti-aliasing technique randomises when the device makes its measurements, ultimately making it impossible to synchronise any ancillary parts to the measurement frequency. Full encryption ensures the authenticity of the data and privacy to the FIA. This eliminates the possibility of the data being used as part of a feedback system to gain a competitive advantage.

Neville Meech, Managing Director at Sentronics commented “This new variant of the FlowSonic fuel flow meter is not only one of the most technologically advanced currently available, but is an important step forward in improving the FIA’s policing of the maximum fuel flow regulations in F1. We’re proud to lead the market in solid-state fuel flow meters, and to demonstrate our ability to develop world-class technology in rapid timeframes”.

Therefore, in the 2020 Formula 1 season teams will now have to run two different Fuel Flow Meters (FFM) supplied by Sentronics, the Team FFM which remains the same as before, then, downstream of this unit will be the new FIA FFM. With the anti-aliasing and encryption technology, this meter will be connected to the FIA Safety Data Recorder (SDR) via a private connection and the data stored for FIA inspection. Thus, output from the FIA FFM will be inaccessible to the teams.

A team’s pool of FIA FFMs will be handed to the FIA, who will allocate a sensor to each car at the start of an event and retrieve the unit at the end of the event.

Both the original fuel flow meter and new encrypted sensor have been used through winter testing in Barcelona, and will continue to be used by all F1 teams for the duration of the 2020 season.

In the grand scheme of things F1 is a decadent indulgence - which is irrelevant to society. And I say this as someone who attends several GP's each year.

Football on the other hand is part of society's fabric, across Europe.
Its disruption is of significant magnitude - especially for Liverpool.

Yeah, then again how much evolution was there to begin with?
As for Team Stroller, they just got last year's MBs and painted them pink. :D

If we had to loose a season, I'd much rather lose this one than next when the cards are shuffled anew.

That makes sense. I could see 8 races run on just a few courses for TV audience only, it might be a way for teams to recoup some of their investment for 2020? I think that they may push the 2021 changes back to 2022, otherwise this years cars will be rubbish.

That's the elephant in the room, I am checking Monaco news every day because if they cancel it then they will also cancel the Historic GP and its auctions 2 weeks prior....and the rate at which the Principality has been cancelling events, shows, conventions and closing shops it seems the writing is on the wall. The Monaco calendar is also very busy with events so a high summer (during the pre-scheduled summer break of the F1 calendar) or fall date would be hard to arrange.

Latest plans for a revised F1 calender include two triple-headers (GB/ESP/HUN & NED/BEL/ITA). Squeezing Vietnam in could even lead to a quadruple-header. Season might end one week later with a BAH/ABU double-header.
