Usually shoddy repair, not fitting fuel bits together properly. Other times its old plastic that degrades on the fuel pumps due to the heat.. inexperienced owner ignores the fuel smell and then a high pressure hose breaks off spilling fuel into the engine compartment on the hot cats.

Finally, sometimes it's just because a car wants out of this world. Owner is an idiot and doesn't treat her right. She just decides to self-immolate.

As an aside.. MANY cars catch fire and burn. MANY cars get stupid hello kitty wraps and worse. It's HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS a year worldwide.

The reason "so many" Ferrari's burn is its sensational. If a 60's american muscle car or a Kia spurts some smoke on the side of the road, you say "oh that sucks" and you go back to playing with the GPS or Radio and drive on. When it's a Ferrari, like a beautiful woman smearing herself with paint or worse, you take notice. I would venture to say that given the production numbers, Ferrari actually has a LOWER rate of fires than many other marques. The only reason Jalopnik bothers to write about it is because it's not mom and dads Kia or Honda that the reader is commuting to school with.

While these below problems are not specific to a ferrari.... it is the proximity of these bits above the hot exhaust that escalates what is normally a small problem to a car-b-que.

There are two fuel pumps in a 360 and are expensive. As others have suggested, there are a number of possible failure points, and you may or may not have one or some. An experienced mechanic can check the fuel system and give you the peace of mind you seek.
