    Not really, when the auto fails in a 456 (and they do) there are no parts available at all, so your car is scrap.

    Hardest part of a conversion would have to be the ECU's and wiring harness :eek:

    Yeah man, HUGE job I can imagine. :D

    I've done manual conversions for customs in stinking old Ford and Commodores back in the day and they are a big job.

    Can only imagine what a pain this job would be!

    My workshop owner Tom had a 4 year old Merc S class the other week with a broken driver side sun visor. They're assembled with plastic clips designed for one-time use, can't be dismantled without breaking the clips, which Merc don't sell as a standalone part. The visor even has one-time clips for the attachment to the header rail. You have to buy a new visor with clips included and they're very expensive because of the vanity mirror and lighting.

    Because he's an old school mechanic, Tom painstaking took the visor apart by splitting the seams with a razor blade, repaired the broken plastic bit with epoxy and glued it all back together

    Late model Mercs are nightmares for frequent and expensive failures btw, you would never want to own one.

    An FYI on the 456 Auto box from 2009;
    " I realise I am not supposed to "solicit", but I can repair the automatic transmission fitted to the 456 GTA and 456M GTA. Contrary to one of the posts I've seen, I am not the designer, but I did run the Ricardo business unit that co-designed and subsequently built this transaxle. I have some parts in hand and most of the special tools required, along with the complete production and fault finding process documentation and the personal contact knowledge of every single component supplier. Please feel free to contact me if you feel I may be able to help you. [email protected] or see www.dabsolutions.co.uk .
    BTW, the internals are not from 4L80."

    Really you'd want a manual car as the donor, and then move everything needed across. Hardly seems worth it.

    Can't imagine there would be much change from $50k with this exercise and then you end up with stories car that would be pretty much saleproof. I'd be cutting my losses or waiting for 2nd autobox to appear at Eurospares etc

    The smartest move is to buy a manual 456 in the first place. They're not at all heavy to drive, fantastic all round car in fact.

    I love hearing things like this. Good on him for doing that fix for the customer which saved them a lot of money I am sure.

    Another classic example, I just had the a/c condensor fan motor bearings fail in my lounge room 7.3KW split system around two weeks ago.

    Talked to a few refrigeration mechanic mates about replacing the motor instead of the entire aircon system and they told me to just bin it all and buy a new split system.

    Bugger that! I may be young (ish), but I've always been old school. It's a 16 years old cheap branded TCL split system that I fit new myself, but it works really well and i'd rather fix it than replace it.

    I ended up spending around 10 mins pulling the old condensor fan motor out, took it into work, pulled it apart and pressed new bearings on and off the shaft. Fixed it for under $10 and around 45 mins of my time in total.

    The bearings were just standard SKF 6203RS bearings, readily available at the local branch. I ended up looking online to find a replacement fan motor and I can't find one anyway, so I am glad it worked out in the end.
