Very, very sad to hear the passing of a British legend. Stirling Moss certainly left his mark on motor racing, winning so many races in different cars. He wanted to race carrying his values, and that meant upholding sportmanship at all time. An independent spirit, Stirling Moss did most of his career as a freelance driver, fighting on private cars against factory teams, and often defeating them. Among his many victories, the 1955 Mille Miglia, the 1961 Monaco GP and the German GP the same year come to mind. Stirling Moss kept in touch with motor racing in various capacities during his retirement, and was later knighted. God Speed, Sir Stirling ...

A truly legendary driver, a man of great honour, and one of life's true Gentlemen! He could have been the Formula One World Champion in 1958, after Mike Hawthorn was given a penalty after the Portuguese Grand Prix, for reversing on the track (a major "no-no!" at the time). Moss had seen what had happened, and had noted that Hawthorn had reversed off the track (which was allowed), and not on the track. Had he kept quiet about what he saw, Hawthorn would have had a penalty, and Moss would have been World Champion that year. Moss' sense of fair play though, wouldn't allow him to keep quiet, and he went to the stewards, and confirmed that Hawthorn was not on the track when he reversed, and so had done nothing wrong. Years later, having never won the the Formula One World Championship, he was asked in an interview if he ever regretted his decision to support Hawthorn, and wished he'd kept quiet instead. His response was: "No, not for one minute, because it wouldn't have been right to win the Championship that way. Mike made sure he didn't do anything wrong that day, by reversing off track, and to keep quiet about what I saw, would have cheated him out of his Championship. I'm sure there are many drivers who would have kept quiet, and would have had no problem to win a Championship that way, but I couldn't". When asked about the dangers of motor racing, and the risk of serious injury or death, his reply was: "I think that was one of the major attractions to me - the thrill of controlling something right on the edge of being out of control. I think that if the risk wasn't present in motor racing, as it seems to be today, then I wouldn't have been a racing driver, and would have done something else risky instead. When you get to the end of a race, and the adrenalin is flowing, because you've been risking your life for lap after lap, there's nothing like it!". We tend to use the term "Legend" far too easily in motor racing these days, often basing it purely on race/Championship success, and Sir Stirling Moss was a very successful driver in his time, but he's a genuine Legend for far more than just his race/Championship wins - He's a Legend for the way he went about his racing, for surviving the dangerous times he raced in, and for being one of life's true, honest, Gentlemen! RIP Sir Stirling Moss - A true racing Legend!
A true racing legend in every sense. I was fortunate to meet him and Lady Susan on a couple of occasions. RIP. BHW

Saw him at Lime Rock (buddy recognized him in a golf cart) several years ago, he was an honoree. They had a few of his racing MBs on display and I think he drove the 300 SLR. RIP.
