Since when is hydro not renewable? You don’t need a dam or alpine by the way - here in Coolum we could be solar pumping sea water up to a holding tank on the cliff and using it to run a small hydro at night; seawater discharged back in to the sea. We need to break the old thinking of massive base load generation and look to smaller self-sustaining cells, particularly in regional and new developments.

Australian governments of either flavour have a well established reputation for being easily convinced to hand over money when under any form of external pressure. There is an ecosystem of consultants (often ex politicians) whose business is to run campaigns on behalf of private companies.

Most politicians are ex lawyers or political staffers, they are often surprisingly weak people who have little commercial understanding and focus most on how public perception might be swung against them by the media. e.g. the ABC wouldn't hesitate to run a headline "Virgin declares bankruptcy, blames Morrison Govt"

I work in a public listed company, which is not too different from govt..
only the bean counters want to save- No one else. They’re in it to maximise their gain out of the funds..

 

Hmmm I’m not keen on governments bailing out private industry but this is kind of a special case since they were ‘banned’ from flying and we only have 2 companies flying domestically in real terms. I also don’t want to lose Virgin because then regional area like mine will be stuck with no option than Jetstar which isn’t even worth considering...

I think I agree with Karen to a degree here. QF and Virgin have been forced to not fly because of the government, not market forces or competition. Although, Virgin was losing money hand over fist for the last few years, so perhaps they AREN’T a viable business at the current price point? People much smarter than I on here may be able to make better comment.

Yes, if you look at people's attitudes towards how money is spent, or what I like to call the give-a-shyt-o-meter, it starts with someone else spending their own money, then someone else spending someone else's money, then you spending someone else's money, then you spending your own money, but the top of the annoyance scale is someone else spending your money - which is what the bureaucracy does to us.

 

I’m conflicted about Virgin because of the viability question as well, but their service is so far above Jetstar. I won’t even consider Jetstar no matter how cheap the price, it’s just not worth it.

 

That's so weird. I never hear anything good about jetstar, but I've never had anything but good experiences with them.
