On the 360s and 430s, I understand there is an "auto" mode where the gears shift automatically. I would never use this function but it would certainly make it more enjoyable for my wife. Does the car do OK in auto mode? I've heard it burns through clutches, is that fact or fiction, and what exactly does that mean? A new clutch every 5,000 miles? 10K?

98% myth that it burns through clutches. There is a little more slip but it isn't that dramatic, particularly if you are driving easily. Auto short shifts every gear so you are pretty much always 3 gears up from where you would like to be. Nothing wrong with that but don't count on a strong pull from rolling on the throttle. Personally, you don't know when it will shift so it is more disconcerting because it shifts and you aren't expecting it. It does not shift like an auto in that it is still a hard coupling so you feel the shifts. But, it definitely works.

Nothing wrong with the auto mode, i use it most of the time. In 9000 miles i have put about 2% wear on the clutch using auto and normal steering wheel setting. Just feed the accelerator in gently and it just sorts itself out. I dont see any difference from a normal auto, except the engine has that much torque it just keeps pulling.

It’s fine for the wife, just a “putt around mode” and shifts are lazy, however we felt it smooth out a bit after driving over a month or so. Manual shifting is the goal for best feel and performance but she will love the car after adjusting ;).
