I’ve searched other threads but can’t find an answer.

I have a 2006 F-430 Spider with 14k miles. I’m getting pretty familiar with this particular vehicle, but I’m not super familiar with F-430s in general. Lately when I really open up the throttle, I smell what seems like burning oil. Definitely not clutch. I pulled the bottom tray and there are absolutely no oil leaks or seepage, and the exhaust parts all look dry. And no smoke out of the exhaust. Seems like normal oil consumption. The smell occurs with oil at both the full dot and low dot on the dipstick. I don’t see any indications of oil being burned. Is this just a normal smell on this car when it’s run hard?

    Thanks for any ideas!

I had something similar with my 360 when I first got it, it ended up being a ignition coil (20 year old originals on 100% stock car) that was arching at high rpm and burning itself. Replaced all coils and things were fine.

The car is totally stock, although I believe the previous owner had a Capristo exhaust on it at some point.

Coils, huh? Interesting, I’ll definitely look into that. I’m sure the car needs new plugs anyway, maybe it would be a good time to do the coils too. Maintenance history is a bit spotty on the car.

    thanks

One more question about the arcing coil. When you replaced it, did you notice anything unusual about the spark plug or coil itself? Burned/worn/gunked up/ anything like that?

Have you looked at your valve cover gaskets? If they haven’t been replaced there’s a chance they are seeping.

Please excuse this if it sounds silly ..but did you check the oil according to the instructions ..alot of people don't wrong and end up causing oil to get into the intake

have you checked your valve gaskets? It could a small amount of oil seeping that leaking onto your exhaust, cats, headers and burning - creating the smell.

I’ve been checking the oil with the engine hot and running. Usually after a drive.

This is the first place to look. There should be no oil burning smell.

best to avoid having the oil up to the full mark, about half way is ideal.

I had the same issue with my 430. After a long { fast } ride there was a burned oil smell. Turned out to be a minor leak on the cranck bearing.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I’ll start with the valve covers. After a quick look, I do see some oil/greasy residue in that area on both sides.
