Models from the Daytona, GTO, F40, Enzo, Scud to present Pista and F8 all have beautiful round circular tail lights. The SF90 has the odd oval-ish tail lights ...why?
    End of an era?

To be different I guess. You can only do the same shape for so long. Remember the 348, the Testarossa?

We said the same thing with the Testarossa. Sometimes companies feel they are getting stagnant and want to try new things.

And they usually go back to what just works. Think Porche 996 headlights.

I’m convinced that the squarish taillights will be Ferrari’s version of the 996 fried egg headlights.

Could also be some lighting technological changes influencing design. Headlights have seen their fair share of change, so maybe they are making a transition to more "futuristic" cues that design renderings always seem to have. Side mirrors will be the future battle ground for old school mechanical discussions if cameras replace them.

It's not just the taillights; note the sf90 headlights... what the hell is going on there?

There is an interview with Manzoni where this question was asked. They piloted the circular tail-lights on the SF90 and it did not work. It has a high rear end and the circular lights made it appear too tall. The rounded rectangles give the rear end wide imposing stance. I think once deliveries start we will dial into the Stradale's design and start to love it. I remember everyone dissing the F12's "Bikini" rear end., now it is a timeless beauty.

One could also use the adjectives "squashed and GM-inspired".
