The plastic tabs of the center section can be gently pryed back to separate the pieces and reveal the resistance wire, contacts for full and empty and the wiper. I gently cleaned the wire with acetone and some 1000 grit sand paper on the wiper and contacts. Very gently - being careful to sand along the wire strands and not across.

How about the metal arms, etc.

What did you do to keep it from rusting again?

I see no way tp pry the entire plactic cover off w/o breaking it.

Or were you refering to what looks like a little 'door' on the side?

The little door looks like it just gives access to adjust the wiper so it is contacting the wire and does not give full access to clean. The white plastic tabs are on the outer edge in your picture. Sorry dont have a way to circle. The metal pieces on my sender were not that badly corroded so i think i just sprayed with wd40 and cleaned with a 3m scuffing pad. I have had good success cleaning corrosion with the por-15 metal etch product. Basically phosphoric acid I believe which neutralizes the rust

while we're on the subject of fuel level sender, is there a reliable/more accurate substitute sender?

or has anyone here crafted a replacement?

I believe you can buy a universal replacement from the usual suspects but not sure you will gain anything in accuracy over the original.
