The rich players will not want to risk an end to their careers from an injury when they're making so little. The guys who are on the last year's contract will have nothing to prove in a short season. The Union won't want to cave to such massive cuts. A player could argue winning the World Series this year will only be an asterisk and not valid.

I don't see the players really giving a crap about "fans" or "owner's problems". We could be in a sit out period where the high priced players bolt to sit in their pools with a margarita while the league replaces them with minor leaguers. You have to wonder if the owners are threatening them with that if they don't agree.

Without fans in the stands (which ain't gonna happen for a while) there isn't enough money to pay the players

The NHL could get the players to agree because 85% of the regular season games had already played and they get bonus money for the playoffs. The NHL makes most of its TV money in the playoffs. MLB gets it from 186 games with 20K average fans in the stands.

Oh but what about all the players that have said 'I love this game so much I'd play it for free.....'?

Not a day goes by that I wish baseball was going on, I have never even given it a thought, in fact, I have forgotten all about it.

Baseball past Thanksgiving? How is that going to work out in the Northern and Midwest cities?

    Seems like a ridiculous offer

    https://sports.yahoo.com/ap-source-mlb-players-offer-114-game-season-020249101--mlb.html

NEW YORK (AP) -- Major League Baseball players ignored claims by clubs that they need to take additional pay cuts, instead proposing they receive a far higher percentage of salaries and a commit to a longer schedule as part of a counteroffer to start the coronavirus-delayed season.

Players proposed a 114-game regular season Sunday, up from 82 in management's offer, a person familiar with the plan told The Associated Press. Done that way, the World Series could extend past Thanksgiving.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no details were announced.

Opening day would be June 30 and the regular season would end Oct. 31, nearly five weeks after the Sept. 27 conclusion that MLB's proposal stuck to from the season's original schedule. The union offered scheduling flexibility to include more doubleheaders as baseball crams the games into 123 days, leaving little room for days off.

MLB's proposal Tuesday would lower 2020 salaries from about $4 billion to approximately $1.2 billion. The union's offer would have salaries total about $2.8 billion.

The plan was given to MLB during an 80-minute digital meeting among Commissioner Rob Manfred, deputy commissioner Dan Halem, union head Tony Clark and union chief negotiator Bruce Meyer. The meeting was contentious, a person familiar with it said.

Like MLB, the union would increase postseason teams from 10 to 14. But unlike MLB, the players' proposal would extend the postseason about a month past its usual end. MLB has said it is worried about a second wave of the coronavirus in the autumn.

While management proposed an expanded postseason for 2020 only, the union offered it for this year and next.

Players proposed new events that could increase revenue, such as a postseason or offseason All-Star Game and/or Home Run Derby, to wear broadcast microphones on the field and participate in television programming away from ballparks.

They also asked for $100 million more in salary to be advanced during the resumption of spring training.

A player would receive about 70% of his salary, or 114/162nds, under the union plan.

The union and MLB agreed March 26 that players would receive prorated shares of salaries, part of the deal in which if the season is scrapped each player was guaranteed service time for 2020 matching what the player earned in 2019. The union also was guaranteed $170 million in salary advances.

While the union says salaries were dealt with then, that agreement covered only games in regular-season ballparks and with fans. The deal called for ''good faith'' negotiations for games without fans or at neutral sites.

MLB told the union that players would get 89% of revenue in an 82-game schedule with prorated salaries and clubs would combine to lose $640,000 for each additional game. The union has questioned the accounting.

If all of these sports teams had any sort of brains they would just open the damn thing up and let the fans decide if they want to take the risk.

Covid's over now since the riots helped shift that mantra. The baseball season needs to be shortened drastically as it is.

They should have started with the 82nd game, on its originally scheduled date, and played the schedule to conclusion, except for skipping the All-Star game, which would have had very little meaning this year.

    Agree.

IF there would be fans in the stands this would have been easy. But I think the owners are writing off any fans this year. That's the problem.

If they don't get it figured out in a week, there may be no baseball this year. And the owners may put it to the players just that way as a last ditch effort, just like the Shut out during the strike.

In most MLB negotiations, the owners are usually depicted as the bad guys, filthy rich and only in it to make money. But if what I heard was true, I have to blame the players for the current situation.

Why? Because they are insisting on getting paid their full salary for playing half a season or less! To me that is asinine. If you play half the games, you should get half your salary. If you play 1/3 of the games, you should get 1/3 your salary. Of course, in the playoffs, the players should get paid fully, since they will, most likely, play all the games. If the players don't back off this demand, I don't think you're going to see any baseball this season.

I think negotiations are over. The MLB has 2 things it can do

    1) cancel the season (it seems like neither side likes this idea)
    2) order everyone back to work. If they do that, the players will do it but sue for lost revenue.

Its make or break this week. They have to start playing in a month or its all over for the year.

Hearing some of them actually speak in fear of covid makes me completely roll my eyes. If these guys had any balls they would be begging for fans to have the right to make the decision for themselves. Either come to the park or don't.

Looks like mlb season is done, sucks astros had a 1 year window and now it’s done. Springer is likely gone, so is brantley and probably yuli and greinke and Verlander won’t be any younger.

Sadly, I think you are correct. Some say they could start the season on Aug 1 but you still need spring training and conditioning. And in the end, whoever won the World Series would have an asterisk behind it. It might be a rather hallow victory.

On the other hand, a 50 game season with EVERYONE in the hunt could mean that players and managers really take every game seriously. Every game won or lost is precious. If you fall back a few games it could be over.

What I heard today is the problem is that the TV networks won't allow the WS to go into November because they already have the time booked up with other sports and events. This is why it has to end in Oct.

Its clear now that of all the pro sports, the owners and players of MLB have the worst relationship.

Frankly I don't get it. Baseball players make tremendous money, better than NFL players. You have way too many crappy markets supporting teams, we need to get rid of the tampa bay, oakland types that never spend a time. Put more good players on other teams and have a more competitive league. Guys like scott boras are idiots telling the players the owners are billionaires, dig in. Ok dummies congrats on no pay this year, would you rather 40% of your pay or zero? Athletes are so out of touch with reality.

The MLB players association has better lawyers!

Actually I think in the case of football the players know they can be replaced pretty easily. Some can't, but many could. The average time in the NFL is like 3 years. Its longer in baseball and the fans get behind the players more. A trade in baseball is much more important than a trade in football.

So the players mean more to the game and the fans -- which gives them more power.

Aside from the Quarterback, who knows who plays on what NFL teams? Can anyone name a lineman?

At least a Baseball player gets to play offense. 3 times a game they get to stand at the plate and everyone is focused on them. In football the only one person people are paying attention to is the QB

MLB Announces Plan to Start Shortened 2020 Season Next Month

    PLAY BALL! We think. Maybe.

The last time there was MLB action, the Washington Nationals were celebrating their 2019 World Series championship. MLB officials announced Monday a plan to start a shortened 2020 season in about a month. (Image: David J. Phillip/AP)
MLB announced Monday night they plan to unilaterally announce a start date and length of the 2020 season. While ESPN reports the season will last 60 games – or slightly longer than a third of a typical 162-game season – the actual length will be contingent on whether the MLB Players Association agrees to report to training camp by July 1 and if the union agrees to the COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

The owners have asked the players to respond by 5 pm Tuesday.

Monday’s announcement is the latest chapter in what’s become a bitter relationship between the owners and players in the oldest major league sport in the US.

Earlier in the day, players rejected owners’ plans for a 60-game schedule that, among other things, also would have made the designated hitter universal for the 2020 and 2021 seasons as well as only expanding the playoffs for the 2020 season.

Aside from a 60-game schedule, those other changes appear to be off the table now. The DH will be in place for 2020 only as part of the COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

“Needless to say, we are disappointed by this development,” MLB stated in its release.

The framework provided an opportunity for MLB and its players to work together to confront the difficulties and challenges presented by the pandemic. It gave our fans the chance to see an exciting new postseason format.”

If players can return to training by July 1, the season would likely begin in late July. League officials and owners have been adamant about ending the regular season in September in order to conduct the playoffs in October.

Short Season May Affect Betting Opportunities
A 60-game schedule will make for an intriguing but short campaign during the dog days of summer – provided the coronavirus still doesn’t kill off the entire season. In the last week, there have been reports of players testing positive, leading to MLB shutting down the training camps for cleaning.

Baseball has probably the most parity of the four major league sports. In a three-game matchup between the league’s best and worst teams, the worst team could still win 2-of-3 games in a series, depending on pitching and other factors. That’s why the season is so long, so the best teams can eventually stand out over time.

In a 60-game season, every game will become a must-win because teams will not have enough time to rally from a disastrous start. The Washington Nationals, last year’s World Series champions, won just 19 of their first 50 games before making their marvelous comeback.

Because of that, it may be worth a look at teams with higher World Series odds that may be likely to start hot. Such teams would include the Cincinnati Reds, who are +2800 at FanDuel and look to have one of the deepest starting rotations in the National League, and the Chicago White Sox, who are +3300 at FanDuel and have a very strong lineup in a winnable American League Central division.

Another thing to consider from a game-betting standpoint. With the DH now also in effect in the National League this year, that should lead to more runs scored per game, which in turn will affect over/unders on runs scored. It may take some sportsbooks a few games to adjust to this especially as some NL teams identify who may get the bulk of the DH at-bats. That means sharp bettors may be able to find values early in the season.

    Dodgers, Yankees World Series Favorites
Currently, at FanDuel, the Los Angeles Dodgers are considered the favorites to win the World Series, with odds at +380. The New York Yankees, who made a big offseason move in signing pitching ace Gerrit Cole from the Houston Astros, are next at +400.

DraftKings has similar odds with LA at +375 and the Yanks at +400. Points Bet offers the Dodgers at +300 and New York at +375.

BetMGM, meanwhile, lists the Yankees as its favorite at +350, with Los Angeles at +375.

This super short season means any injuries are going to be a major blow. You go on the 15 disabled list and you lose 1/4 of the season!

And how to the minor league teams fill in the gap? Do they come back also?

One thing that is interesting is every team has a chance this late in the season. That never happens. Everyone is in first place with 1/3 of the season to go.

Every game is going to be critical.

I could see some team with a deep pen like the rays shocking everyone They're 20:1 now but i like them alot. Is blake snell gonna play, initially he said he wouldn't. Tampa is also used to playing infront of no fans, not being sarcastic but it helps them,Snell and glasnow are as good as any 1-2 punch and the rays like the a's can get hot and beat anyone. Im a homer but the short season helps houston alot, greinke and verlander are 37, pitching 12 games vs 35 will be a welcome for them. McCullers is coming off a lost season of injury so short season is welcome for him too. There won't be a full spring training and facing all the astros hitters will be a nightmare, we have correa batting 7th still, thats insane he'd hit 3rd or 4th on most teams.

    Astros beat the yankees
    Dodgers beat the braves

Astros win the world series, dodgers fans melt again.
