What were the great whatifs of late 90s F1? Schumacher to Williams or Mclaren in 96, basically Mclaren decides to hire Schumacher to partner with Hakkinen? Irvine goes to Mclaren in 96 instead of Coulthard? Wiliams decides not to part ways with Damon Hill and Frentzen does not go to Williams? It can be argued that Damon Hill in 97 and 98 was not slower than Frentzen in 97 or 98.

From the early 1990s the great What If was Jean Alesi to Williams. How many wins and WDCs would have come his way?

What if Schumacher didn't break his leg in 1999?

Or Ferrari stuck with the V12 for 1996. Schumacher loved the 1995 car with the V12 much more than with the V10 fitted, as he could use the engine torque much more to manipulate the car.

Schumacher wasn't going to let that happen.

I think that Schumacher muffed it intentionally.

What if Jackie Stewart had accepted Enzo Ferrari's offer to join the Scuderia in 1967?

Jackie turned up with his solicitor for the interview, and the Commandatore took offense of that.
"Does he think he comes to buy the company?" muttered the Old Man to his secretary.
Unknown to Stewart, Ferrari was also conducting some parallel negotiations with Jacky Ickx, his F2 team mate.

Stewart chose to race for Ken Tyrrell who was starting a new F1 team with Matra chassis and Cosworth engines.
Together, they won more than 20 GPs and 3 WDCs .
Ickx signed for Ferrari, won 8 GPs and was once runner-up in the WDC before leaving Ferrari, disgusted by the unreliability.

What if Ferrari hadn't fired Prost for his 'truck' comment
What if Ferrari hadn't hired Prost, would Mansel have not said he was retiring?
What if Benetton hadn't had an illegal car in 94?
What if Gachot hadn't pepper sprayed that guy?
What if the 84 Monaco GP hadn't been stopped short? - Hint, Senna's car was about to break and Belof would probably have finished first on the road before DQ.
What if Gilles hadn't gone out to try and beat Pironi's time?
What if Lauda hadn't crashed at the Ring in 76?
What if Moss hadn't crashed at Goodwood?

It's an impossible game to play. Every 'what if' you can dream up has a half dozen 'what if's' that preceded it.
