Could some confirm I can change the steering rack grease with it in-situ?

I just bought the car and found the gaitor/rubber boot missing on the drivers side (it is a LHD F355). There was some dirt in the steering mechanism.

I want to avoid a future rebuild due to debris in the system and replacing grease could clear potential dirt inside the rack.

Any ideas how to do this trick?
    Thanks for your input.

That would be on the short side of the rack. The proper way is to remove it from the car ( a big job) then, disassemble it, clean it, re lubricate the rack movement parts with new grease, then reseal.

The short cut is clean up anything you can reach (hard to reach), lube it with new grease, add new boot and clamp (hard to do in situ), then hope for the best.

Ok so I have found the end bush that has the locking wire available in Western Australia through Power Steering Parts Australia. $58 AUD. Fits perfectly. I used it in mine as I had a leak from the seal that goes in the end of this bush. Just thought I should add.

Is that a Volvo part, Paul? Would you have a part number?

It's on the bag in the picture mate that's the No to quote the guys in WA. Yes it's a Volvo part but it suits lots of racks. Surprisingly I fixed my leak in the car. It wasn't to bad a job. I took the car for a spin a month ago then noticed a drip of fluid on the undertray. Grrrr

So the $56 part did not fix the leak?

Bad explanation on my part. I replaced the plastic bush with the aluminium type whilst replacing the oring and seal. No more leak

Mitchell, I just wanted to send along a quick note of thanks for creating this thread and sharing your steering rack rebuild DIY. While the rack on my 355 is fine, the rack in my Lancia Delta Integrale Evo2 was in need of a rebuild and it turns out the TRW rack in this little beast is very similar to the 355. I was able to make quick work of the job thanks to you!

That beast has fenders from a BMW E30 M3 ....

Great to see you make use of that information.

They are definitely of the same era. It's fun watching the BMW and Lancia fans battle it out over which was the better car (Lancia Delta Integrale v BMW M3 E30 - Shoot-Outs - YouTube). I love them both but spending summers as a kid in Italy and following WRC the Lancia was the clear winner for me with 6 Consecutive WRC titles, 5 European titles, 7 Italian titles, . . .

Unit links very similar to 355's. Can you confirm lock to lock turns? We might have something here.

    2.8 turns lock to lock.

If you're asking in the hopes of considering utilizing this rack in the 355 I don't think it will work. First off, the location of the hydraulic lines on the Lancia rack are in different locations on the housing and the chassis mounting points are different as well. Second, my understanding is that the 37502267 TRW rack was purpose built for the Evo2 so I suspect it would be very difficult to source.

2.8 turns! I think we have a match! Fiorano quick steering rack is 2.75 turns lock to lock. Which means, there’s a chance TRW used the same rack and pinion as the Lancia. Im short, do you think the Lancias rack and pinion will work in a 355 standard rack?

    @PAUL500

    Thoughts?

Standard 993 rack is 2.47 lock to lock. 964 is 2.81. Pretty much all LHD hydraulic racks are going to look alike in the pics. I wouldn't even worry about where the hydraulics are located (easy to have new lines made), what's going to matter is how it mounts. Anyone have pics of the 355 rack in the car?

I Googled that P/N on the bag, Paul, but it only only got hits for seal kits, not that metal end bush. I thought about contacting the company directly, but I don't think I have enough information.

As mentioned, the Lancia rack will be a rare item itself.

Although I have a lhd 355 rack in the UK, there wont be any comparable lhd racks with any PAS specialists locally, they would need to be European based to have any hope of finding suitable internals from another rack that may fit the 355 body.

Since this thread got bumped.. @yelcab - How do you do this without marring the shaft or the inner tie rod? I'm at this point in my rebuid and my tie rods won't budge. I bent back the spot where the tie rod was peened in the groove on the shaft. Used soft jaws on the shaft in a good vise with an inner tie rod tool (muffler clamp looking thing), and the shaft just spins. I'm sure I can get it off, but not without messing something up. Any pointers?

I used a pipe wrench on the shaft at the location where it does not slide into the rack. I did leave a small scar but it does not matter because it does not fit into anything. The inner tie rod has these two depressions where you can get a tool (rent, or buy or borrow) that fits into those slots to turn it out.

Thanks for the response. My inner tie rods are smooth. The tool I got works (Napa #SER 946), but the shaft spins. I'll apply more grip at a spot where a scar doesn't matter.
