    A 1998 car would have had a SONY -F20 installed as I have in my 1999 550...

The XR-F21RDS came around about a year later.

And as you mentioned, Ian, this too was a SONY with a Ferrari-branded faceplate, in this case a SONY XR-C720...

NO RDS (Radio Data System) so it can't display station names, songs, traffic, etc.)

Story behind it too. I bough my car sight unseen other than pictures and a PPI. When it arrived I noticed that it had a cheap after market radio in it. The pictures showed the radio above. So I call the dealer and asked about it. He said the old radio didn't work so he though he was doing me a favor by installing a new one. I said I wanted the original. He still had it so he sent me the original. Thing is, the 95s didn't even come with a radio in the first place. A previous owner must have installed it.

    John,

Parts are getting scarce for these older SONY heads. My SONY XR-F20 was repaired twelve years ago by SONY in their Texas facility. The tape drive had to be replaced. They no longer repair them. Seven years ago I sent my radio to Factory Car Stereo Repair in Florida for repairs. A circuit board needed replacement.

Here's their website: Factory Car Stereo Repair

You had a good experience with Factory C S Repair?

Been meaning to get off my butt and get it fixed.

Yes I did, John. They give specific instructions to rule-out the fuse block as being the cause of a no power problem and also give a do-it-yourself fix: SONY Stereo Dead - Do It Yourself Repair

In my case, it was a circuit board. The repair was ~$175 and the turnaround time was ~one week.

Thanks again Barry. That's my problem. No power, no turn on. I have bench tested the unit so I don't think it's a fuse. I watched the DIY video. Looks like I have a project. :)

They also cleaned the tape drive assembly while they were in there. There are no replacement tape drive gears, gear plates, and drive mechanisms available so they advised periodic preventive maintenance servicing of the head.

I bought the Sony unit off of eBay three years ago and still haven’t installed it.

Is it possible to add a usb or blue tooth input to these old units?

I have tried (on a Becker radio) Sony CPA-9C cassette adapter which is hard wired to the MP3 player. Not a very good quality sound, due to limitations of the cassette player including losses in the magnetic transmission to the player's head. I have excellent results with a Bluetooth FM transmitter - small, plugged into the cigar lighter socket and is tuned to a free FM frequency on the radio. These transmitters normally come with one or two USB output sockets.

I use these two but there are many other shapes and sizes.
