    I have a fairly strong fuel smell from the trunk area (drivers side) and I will have that rectified but more importantly...........the car seems down on power below 4000 RPM and the previous owner had the injectors cleaned and had it dyno-tuned because it was “running lean” so I am going to go ahead and address a known failure point (whilst the fuel smell gets resolved) which is the dissolving gasket the fuel pump sits in (PN 170511 aka #16 on the image below)


    QUESTION: Should I replace with OEM (black rubber below at very bottom) or go with Fabio’s plastic (white plastic parts below)

    Has anybody tried them ?

    I am replacing #16 In the diagram.

    When I stated “rubber gasket at bottom” I was referencing the image I had posted.

    I am aware of that, The rubber anti chafe pad # 2 is made of the same material that the rubber sleeve #16 you are replacing and it disintegrates just like the sleeve therefore you may find that it needs replacing as well. I merely wanted to let you know that a much less expensive alternate to the original is available.

    The gasket in the link I showed is not rubber, it will not be affected by gasoline like the original.

    Thanks again for that heads up. I just ordered the Teflon 38mm kits from Fabio and will have Blackhorse install them. It looks fairly straight forward so hopefully it is not too much in labor.

    I need him to figure out this raw fuel smell coming from the boot and I betcha that chafe pad may need replacing.

    Those leaks are quite often a cracked fuel pump cover or a leaking roll-over valve, with the first being more common.

    Thanks Taz, yes Blackhorse showed me (what he thought was the same issue you described on a 412 he had in the shop With the pumps out and how he (Had to) fix it.

    Hopefully these disintegrating gaskets are the cause of low/underwhelming performance under 4000 RPM’s and the occasional “rough” stumbling start. The previous owner had the injectors cleaned due to “lack of power” under 4000 RPM’s.....curiously enough. Car has 19k I am sure they are clogging up the works.

    Question:
    Should I be able to at least break the tires loose from a dead stop with this car (456M GTA) if I mash the gas pedal ?

    When those rubber pieces disintegrate they end up in the fuel filters and can clog up fuel flow pretty completely. Make sure you swap those out as well if they need it.

    Are the fuel filters difficult to access ?

    On the 456s and 550s, there are inline filters that should be pretty easy to check/change. The injectors are high pressure, so doubt anything is stuck in there. They do need regular cleaning and new Viton seals, especially if they have not been cleaned for a while.

    That is a bit of good news.

    I do see that both fuel filters were changed out in 2014 at 17,100 miles when the owner flushed the injectors and had it dyno tuned —because it was low on power under 4000.

    Car has19,600 on it now....I know these rubber bits are just disintegrated as I type this.

    Injectors should be fine, then, but no telling about the filters. Easy enough just to remove one and see if there is any junk in there.

    Jeff, years ago I have gone through that ( gas smell ) with Black horse, the valves # 195049 x 3 needs to be replaced, you can not do insitu, the tank needs to come out.

    More often the fuel pump covers than the roll-over valves, but both do go bad. One is just easier to see by quite a bit.

    Actually it's not the valve, it's the gasket.

    The pump covers seem to have a history of busting/cracking.
    Last time I was there Carl showed me what he assumed the problem to be on a 412 cover that he had fixed, said it happens all the time.

    Man I would hate to have to tear the tank out.

    Dave, no question about the gaskets, but if you gone that far check those valves too, they become sticky and don't operate as should be and cause gas vapor back up.

    Dave- At some point they updated those gaskets (part number 195049 is a fairly late part number) and they now fit a bunch of V12s (550 and 456M, too) and V8s. Wonder if these are better lasting than the old ones because I have not read about too many 575M failures. Old ones were 169938 and might have been fitted to early 575s, too, since they show in early 575M parts catalogs as use until stock is exhausted.
