What color is the paint and finish on the oem 360 ignition key?

I am going to sand it down and repaint and replace the horse.

the second key I have is new so I can also use it as a match...

    thanks for any help.

I plan on doing mine soon and will probably go with Ferrari Red instead of trying to refresh to silver.

that said i have leftover high temp silver from painting my rotor hats and might start there. I don't think it will match exactly but i'm mostly just looking to have the key look better, not have it exact match.

if your refinish goes sideways i have one of these and definitely happy with it:

I have a third red key fRom those guys that is also a good extra.

The original finish of the silver keys is a bit gritty so I’m not sure how they did that

There's been a few posts about refinishing keys. I chose to remove the clear coat and buff it to a shiny finish. Haven't put the cavalino back in as Im in the process of casting some resin ones in the same colour as my car (Giallo). Here's a pic of the polished key.

I'd be interested in buying a cavalino (depending on cost) if you have the opportunity to make an extra!

Robb- The key looks like Argento Nurburgring/Argento Metallizzato (same color) Ferrari uses on its silver wheels. PPG code is 36520.

I'd be happy to send you one, but at the moment I'm having trouble getting a clean cast happening. They come out of the mould with a few rough bits and they're so small and fragile that I can't clean them up with a razor blade or anything else. If I get something decent, I'll message you and get your postal details.

    Cheers, Jon

The exact same metal cavallino rampante(1/18 scale) is available from Scale Details on Ebay. It is a Pocher scale model part. ~$12 and fits perfectly in the key depression. I refinished my ratty looking 360 keys and replaced a missing cavallino many years ago and just bead blasted the keys down to clean aluminum and to this day they still look good. No paint to chip, etc. I think they should have been finished that way from the factory. No nonsense. Clean bead blasted aluminum.

Yep. That is the way to do it. As it wears a nice patina develops and it looks even better. If you do not like the "patina", bead blast it again.

Would you have a link to it on eBay? Had a look and couldn't find it.

Key is likely not aluminum if it did not corrode after being shot blasted or sanded.

Pretty sure its aluminum. Corrosion is much slower with aluminum and it will not rust. A simple wash with soap once in a while will reduce the chances of any corrosion or oxidation. Salt exposure can increase the chances of oxidation/corrosion. I was thinking about anodizing it which would provide the perfect corrosion resistance. But so far, its been a year, and no sign of corrosion. It is still raw aluminum, so yes, it is susceptible to some form of corrosion or oxidation. I am no expert, so take with a grain of salt...

https://scaledetails.com/pocher-1-8-ferraris/ I just googled "Scale Details", selected 1/8 Ferraris and it is listed in that section.
About corrosion. Why would an aluminum car key ever corrode in you pocket, ignition, or in your house? Maybe if you lived in a hut on a beach?

Aluminum corrodes just like most metals and forms a dull oxide on the surface. Aluminum also rubs off as a black residue of the oxide. Happens anywhere there is moisture in the air. Maybe not in the middle of the Sahara, but most other places.

I live in the very not and humid swamp and my keys have no corrosion at all and no black residue. I stripped my two keys many, many years ago. Stripped Ferrari keys will not corrode under normal circumstances. Maybe an alloy was added to increase corrosion resistance?

Maybe they are pot metal and not aluminum?

My original (and quite worn) 360 key (right) has successfully been refinished to be a ringer for the new blank I had cut that was never used (left).

    I am pleased.
