Has anyone every tried to refinish a shift knob or similar part? Mine has a ton of scratches and I'm curious if there is a way to polish it or refinish it so it looks new again.

Has been done with the 3 pedal knobs/balls so no reason it will not work on yours.

Any machine shop can use a buffing wheel and compound to make it shine. Good idea to clear coat afterwards. Or you can use a drill with a buffing wheel and a compound stick yourself. Not hard to do at all.

It has a clear coat that comes of in patches and looks like crap. I sanded off lightly with a 600 grit then used compound to polish it to a mirror shine

hwyman, is spot on judging by the photo - likely the clear coat - I also have a is a patch on my own gear shift which is hard to stop picking at!!

The clear coat on mine is coming off in chunks, but the knob is also scratched up like a previous owner was wearing rings on their right hand. It is going to take some sanding/buffing to clean up the mess I have. Might be easier to just replace it with new.

I’ve done several gear knob refurbs. Top tip is to get an M10 bolt (I think- need to confirm), then mount the bolt in a drill press, and use the spinning drill to do most of the buffing work. Start with a coarse compound to cut the lacquer off, then when it’s away start going finer. I used a DA polisher on the knob with it spinning in the drill at the same time to get the final mirror finish.

I didn't know these shift knobs came in a highly-polished mirror finish. Both my F355 Challenge and 550's shift knobs are a satin anodized finish...
