Agreed, and with the stratos it feels like the train was never even in the station. I'm still pissed fcar squashed the 430 based 'new stratos' project a number of years ago

The Stratos was always in my dream three car garage ( with a 288 gto and miura) so I would agree that is the star in the photo.
Turning now to the 246 and 308, to me they are both sublime shapes. In my eyes the 246 is slightly long aft of the rear wheel arch. That is a bit like criticising a supermodel because of a mole. But the 308 and 328 are faultless in my opinion (and also the 208 turbo, of course 😀)

In my opinion, what most 308 owners want isn't the increased monetary value. As others have said, if the 308 became a $300k car, everything else would likely appreciate proportionately, so it wouldn't help to leap to the next step on the collector ladder. It's the increased social status of having a very special or particularly desirable Ferrari that owners are after.

Everyone gets something unique out of ownership. Perhaps some fit your paradigm but not many I know.

My personal opinion is that a 308 is not bought for social status, rather as a piece of automotive art, driving experience the car gives, and fulfillment of childhood dreams. People who buy things for social status usually go after the "latest greatest".

Today you would get a "like new" 360 (Spider to be seen driving the car) or 430 or maybe a 50k miles 458 for the money you need for a 308/328. That are the cars people driving for social status, but someone who spend 180k+ for a glas 308GTB would NEVER EVER drive something like that in stead of the 308 (but in addition for daily drive maybe).

If you drive a car for status, you want Most people to at least know what it is. 458, everyone knows it's expensive. 95% of the public has no idea what a glass 308 is worth.

I know more than a few 308 drivers who also run much more expensive Ferraris, both new and vintage.

I think the 246 is far more iconic than the 308 GTB/GTS, but the 308 is still a beauty. I think that the whole Magnum PI stigma takes away some value. Just my average guy two cents.

Iconic isn't the word I would use to describe a 246, at least by the classic definition. I think the 308 is much more iconic (widely known) due to Magnum p.i. I'm not sure the average Joe would know what a Dino is but would recognize a 308 as a Ferrari due to it's TV/movie resume. Celebrity status, if you will. Lack of a Ferrari emblem/badge doesn't help a 246 either. Of course it's rare and more "vintage" but...I stand by my original post that started the conversation years ago.

The Dino was my favorite from way back when I was in high school before the 308 came out and a big part of it was that I thought that maybe someday I would be able to afford one. So even after the 308 was introduced I still favored the Dino but they always seemed to remain at a price equal to a decent starter home. Then, whatever happened happened and now you can get a Boxer for the same price so does a Dino even make sense anymore? That’s when I really warmed to the 308 and now I actually favor it over both the Dino and the Boxer because in the end the being able to afford one was the most important part.

Iconic not a good description, classic is a better.

Would be a bit disappointing seeing the Fiat stamps on the engine?
