50% capacity will be all in the bleachers closest to the track. What a BS idea to save us all from the sky falling.

This will still be over 150,000 people in close proximity. Risky . . . .

Risky for what? I guess if the sky falls on them while they are all that close, it could be worse than if they were spread out.

Oh. Statistically speaking the drive to the race and the drive home are far more risky than the fake pandemic. Heck, one probably has a better chance of being killed in the stands as a spectator than of dying from covid.

Don't bet on it. They hope for a 150k. The actual numbers may be a wee bit different than that. Indy does not have the charm or the charisma it once did. Kinda like the NASCAR bump at Darlington. From there it went back to normal.

The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race doesn't have "charm"? If that event doesn't have "charm" what event does?

    Well, actually no.

Since 1911 there have been 10 spectator deaths at the Indianapolis 500. (1911 is the 1st year for the Indy 500, they ran other, shorter races before then.)

If 150,000 people attend the race this year, the infection rate of 98.4/100,000 (current national rate in the USA) and the death rate 4.96% of those infected means that we'd have approximately 7 fatalities among those spectators. And that doe not take into account any secondary or tertiary cases caused by one of the attendees spreading the virus.

So, in 111 years, there have been what, 40,000,000+ (estimate) fans at the race and 10 deaths. .0000000025% vs. the potential for .0000467% this year due to COVID infections an 18,000X higher risk. A huge statistical difference. If the attendees are willing to quarantine for 14 days before the race, and 14 days after, you could reduce the risk probably by 98%.

It appears, statistically, worrying about dying in either scenario is pretty unnecessary.

Mostly agree, but that wasn't the point being made.

There's a very high probability that more than one attendee WILL die due to exposure to the virus, almost 100% There is a very LOW probability that anyone will die from debris getting tossed into the stands, almost nil, even if you just take deaths/year at the track vs total years the race has been run. Attendees have a much higher risk from COVID than from a loose wheel killing them.

Either way, I'd rather watch it on TV. :D

Really? "WILL die" I would like to see that math.

It certainly won't curtail the spread of the disease....but what's the objective? To slow the diseases or eradicate it? I think the goal post moved at some point.

I have been to the Indy 500 twice. The speeds are impossible to convey on TV and seeing what these people do heading into turn one live is insane.

Having said that, I would prefer to watch it on TV as well.

So, that 127K casualties statistic isn't true ?

I take it you have a wicked sense of humour.
