my 1998 550 trunk struts are exhausted and can no longer hold open. i ordered new ones but how do I install them without cracking the factory paint on the mounting studs? is there a 'trick'? anyone deal with this in the last 22 years?

There is a small clip on each rod end, pry it open and pull out, then the rod ends will snap off the mounting studs

    Bob,

Now that you got your new struts installed, how would you like to have your trunk lid open at the touch of a button on your key remote? Dave can help you with that as well. :)

Not anymore, I'm not doing those anymore, I'm happy to share a pic but that's about all I have, no schematic.

Well, he'll just have to do it the old-fashioned way. At least now his trunk lid will stay open. :)

The same retention clip is found on each end of the strut, Bob. Remove them both...

Your new struts came with pins 57 and 58 attached with those same clips. You can also replace your existing pins if you'd like or just replace the struts.
