    Nice saying :D
Anyways, they R reliable cars in general. Got a 1996(if I remember the YOP correctly) bentley brookland, when I used to drive the car many years ago, it was solid, needs lot of attention though every while and then when it comes to leaks and oil changes....etc
Still have the car, in fact fixing it up at the moment, but chose not go through the while nine yards, as it will cost me about the price of purchasing another one:)

Never had the desire to own one after taking a Corniche for a spin.

I’m lying, I never had the desire to own one prior. Normally, I’m a glutton for rare saloons and non-super car oddities, but this era RR conjures nothing but sympathy for the owner. Similar to every poor devil who sprung for an XJ40 or a BiMazzer.

I was gifted a free '67 Silver Shadow. Fortunately all the hydrolics were disconnected. It is a very fun car, and is only happy doing 90mph. No matter how you drive it, it will only achieve 8mpg however. It can pull a U-turn within its' own foot print, and is very nimble. However, one has absolutely NO communication with the road. It's like waving a dish in the air. Even the column shift lever is interrupted by a massive soloniod; you can't even feel shifting the GM automatic!
I'm a hands on car guy, but when the brake system failed, and front motormount got eaten by leaking glyptol, I had to farm that stuff out. Still it's a fun car, and there is nothing like pulling up to an "open house for sale" with this beast. If only the realitor knew that in reality, I am a broke tramp.

    That's a valuable point..

    Different car, same story:
I bought a nice Alfa Romeo 164LS executive sedan for $3500 a couple years ago.

It responded well to maintenance and repairs, did a lot of work to improve and upgrade it too; struts, tires, brakes, steering rack, ECU chip, Q-spec intake runners, and all that cost me about $10,000. It ran and drove really well - comfortable, quite, and competent...

..and when time came to sell it, I got ....$3,500.

...just make sure you enjoy the ride, cuz sometimes that's all you're left with.

    Spot on comment...

Being a person whom bought a cheap 1967 RHD Silver Shadow twenty years ago I can attest to the redundant comments that there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Roll Royce. After spending approximately $20,000 for parts alone I finally sold my cheap Rolls on Ebay for $5,000. Soon thereafter I bought a small Cessna to travel and found it profoundly cheaper and more reliable to operate. The receipt shown for the brakes says it is an estimate so possible they have not been rebuilt and with the rear sagging like it is indicates much is still wrong with the suspension. Now what does that mean to me? It means stay away and buy something you can afford like a Cessna. I hate to be negative on any cars listed here but this is the only car (Rolls/Bentley) that I really feel the buying public should get educated on before entertaining purchasing. Best of luck to both seller and buyer!

I can concur with this. I bought a pretty well-sorted Corniche and I've put in about $12,000 in maintenance and repairs over two years. At least the Corniches are holding their value and have some future potential. The Silver Spur/Spirit was one of the most polarizing Rolls-Royce designs ever. If I had to have any of them, it would be the Bentley Turbo R variant. Dumping $20k-$30k in parts and labor into one of these is money you will never see again.

I’m presently looking at a 1989 Turbo R. Needs a few things but I’m a licensed tech and have worked on a few over the years. Parts can be a killer though. The biggest issue I’ve seen over the years is deferred maintenance much like any other exotic. However, much like Mr tbakowsky, cars like that have provided me with a very comfortable living. :)

I had some pretty daunting electrical issues on my Corniche. The previous owner (who lived in the scorching hot state of Arizona) apparently had the car rewired so that the fan would run constantly (instead of intermittently based on temperature), and that created a cascade of other electrical problems like issues with hot starting. I had the electrical system put back to factory specs by a Rolls-Royce specialist, and now everything works as good as new. Cost a bit of money and took a bit of time, but in the end it was worth it.
