It was too much to hope for that F1 could just move on and stick with current drivers and upcoming talent. I'l admit, I've never been an Alonso fan. I don't hate him or have vitriol like people have for Lewis and Seb... I just never fell into the hype ... the myth that is Fernando. Either way, looks like he's coming back.

Looks like it.....but nothing "confirmed" yet.

    Spanish papers says he is.

There was also a deleted Renault twitter feed that stated it but later redacted and changed.

It is for the team to decide. Ocon not all proven. One year is ok to assist the team etc

I’m an Alonso fan. But I have mixed feelings about a return in a Renault...

I'm of three minds on this one:

The part of me that remembers what Alonso's talent was, looks forward to his return.

The part of me that enjoys the schadenfreude of uncensored team radio looks forward to Alonso's perspective on the Renault

The part of me that is a realist says that this won't be the Alonso of old, and the Renault is not very good, and therefore this is at best an attention grab on Renault's part, and not good for either the sport or Renault.

I love Alonso but I don't see how Renault is going to help him in any way or form.

At least he will be in the race but that's about it. Akin like Kimi is part of it too but only in name.

Other than a paycheck... what's the point? Is he just gonna go around the track yelling "FP2" again? I mean... just go out gracefully.

That was some good entertainment I must admit. That Honda Power Unit was legendary...legendarily bad.

    Yeah you're right GP2!

FP2... GP2... R2D2... it's all the same. All he's gonna do is piss and moan the entire season.

I don't know what to make of this.

Renault must be desperate I guess.

No, it is not all the same. At least R2D2 could hold the horizontal stabilizer bar (whatever that is).

That's going to be sad if true. I don't like him anyway, but I'm struggling to understand the benefit to him here unless he needs to get out of the house or something.

Love Alonso, he would have bagged 1-2 WDC's in the past few years instead of loser Vettel.

However, I bet Alonso wishes he could go back to McLaren instead of Renault. Norris was a beast on the final lap.

Well there goes whatever’s left of the Renault team. Whatever, I’m so excited that I could lie down and do nothing.

This is incredibly spot on. He'd be better suited to go after Mclaren given their latest performance. I don't get it.

Brundle is a fan of this development!

Didn’t honestly think I would have the chance to speak with Fernando on the F1 grid again as a driver. Time to beef up the Renault throttle pedal for some heavy action. Wonder how he will do against the new kids in town at 39 yrs old. Just fine I suspect. pic.twitter.com/8xW4tdKTUa

'He's one of the all-time greats': Martin Brundle's verdict on Alonso comeback news
"It's good news that Renault are looking forward because we're concerned about any teams that might be thinking about leaving Formula 1. So that's very good news.

"Fernando Alonso picks a car up and carries it, and so is very exciting to watch. He does turn 39 on the 29th of this month and we've got a lot of young kids in there at the moment in their early 20s getting the job done. We thought there was a changing of the guard, and we were losing the older drivers.

Bring it. Looking forward to a full yr of F1 with more parity across the Board (assuming Ferrari can get their engine tuned up and deliver the same to the client teams).

But as it turned out, not quite as bad as the McLaren chassis.

First time someone "three-peats" with the same team?

Mixed opinion: a big name of the sport and the possibility of some fireworks (I don´t know if of the good or the bad kind) add to the show. Also with the new rules who knows where Renault is going to be. On the other hand, maybe it would have been better for all involved to move on.
