    Here's a very rare thing. A 250 GTO with a cold air tray. It's 250 GTO '64 5573GT.

    Pic from Ultimate Car Page.

250 GTOs 4399GT and 5575GT have cold air bonnet intakes too.

I've seen pictures of 4399GT's engine, but not with the cold air tray. Did it ever, or does it now have the cold air tray?

Does anyone have any pictures of 5575GT's engine?

Images from 2003 (Cavallino Magazine issue # 136) show the engine without a cold air tray.
I can't immediately find any period images of the engine bay.

Page 173 of Gianni Rogliatti's 'Ecurie Francorchamps' book shows a black & white image of what appears to be 5575 GT in 1964 without the cold air tray.
Not sure if the image is pre-or post blister to the bonnet.

5575 got the hood scoop for Le Mans 1964. I do not have an engine photo from this race. I do have photos of the Tour de France later that year, and there is NO cold air tray present. Today, the car has no tray.

5573GT may well be the only 250 GTO with a cold air tray.

A little known or realised fact is, that in the interest of lightness, the 250 GTOs do not have any rain/water guttering under the bonnet or the boot. If you wash the car you will likely get water in the boot.

Steve: I doubt the lack of rain gutters had anything to do with reducing weight (only a few ounces). More likely they were built that way to simplify construction. They were disposable race cars, and nobody cared about these "finer" things.

Roof/Sail Panel Seam on 250 GTO S1 and other areas the body was prone to cracking.

If you've ever wondered what the seam, or gap, where the roof meets the sail panel was for on GTOs after and including chassis number 3757, it was because the bodywork was prone to stress cracking in this area, so Ferrari built in the seams here.

    Below is 4153GT.

The body was also prone to cracking around the rear wing air exhaust vents behind the wheels, as well as the areas surrounding the front spot lamps and brake cooling air intakes.

The bracer tube across the engine is said to have been installed to help prevent cracking in the bodywork on the top of the front wings and to stop the wings moving in and that occurred without it.

Below is 330 LM 4561SA showing the bracer tube.

Source of information is David Clarke in his 250 GTO book. He was the founder of Graypaul Motors in the UK, who owned 250 GTO 3869GT for many years and rebuilt at least 8 250 GTOs.

This is also why alloy 275 GTBs have roof seams due to cracks in the roof where it meets the sail panels and the A pillars that would be caused by flexing, as confirmed by Dyke Ridgley.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but here is a link to Phil Hill discussing 3223GT at Sebring https://www.roadandtrack.com/motorsports/news/a18029/ferrari-gto-history/
My question is: I thought from period photos that the car he drove was the blue one, wouldn't that make it 3387GT? Or did I misunderstand?

Yes, it was actually 3387GT painted Blu Genziana that Hill and Gendebien raced to 2nd OA and 1st IC on 24th March, 1962 at Sebring, the 250 GTO's maiden race.

Many thanks for the clarification. I must say that 3387GT looks fantastic in that color.

3387GT has recently been restored in its original colours and configuration as at Sebring 1962. You've probably seen pictures and videos of it on this site and all over the net recently.

re 3729 GT - Nice. Seems there are no dash vents?

Also re 3729 GT, are the sliding side windows in these GTO's easily removable for hot days?

Were the hood vents post-factory? I think they are a great addition.

(sorry Picchu88 if I interrupted your flow on two pages now, did not know you were on a roll! You have many fine photos)

Yes. They're plexiglass so you just sort of push at the middle and pull at the top (thus creating a bow/reducing the pane in height) and then they'll clear the metal frame and pop out.

Top of the dash is flat too. Hood vents were added after delivery, as well as the 3rd fender vent, as also happened with 3647GT.

The side windows can also be easily removed with your elbow. Don't ask me how I know.
