According to the book, "The Complete Ferrari" by Godfrey Eaton, the "E" in the name has come to refer to the type 128E engine. This was a newly designed engine with coil valve springs instead of the "mouse-trap" style valve springs used on earlier versions of the 3.0 liter, type 128 engine. This engine had new cylinder heads with the spark plugs on the outside of the engine, instead of in the "V" of the engine. Essentially now on the exhaust pipe side instead of adjacent to the intake manifold. This was to allow for better airflow through the head and larger intake valves.

Manta, you must be Neil. 4209 GT was sold by me to my Brit friend (living in the US) John Starkey for export to Japan.

The " E " stands for Extended. The chassis was elongated to accommodate extra room for rear seats.

Extended in italian as far as I know:
    Esteso
    Elongato

I always thought E stood for Elongato because of the longer chassis. But that was always a guess of mine...

My father had many cars over his lifetime along with a 250 GTE 2+2 that he purchased in the early '60's. He told me the 'E' stood for 'Europe' and not Export. So, I always wondered why all the gauges were in American English unless they were converted on Import to the USA. Ours was purchased in Italy and imported to Cincinnati by a well known Doctor. 'guess well never really know!

As I have stated in post 17, read the new GTE book for a plausible explanation for the letter E.

The E designation is simply Enzo paying tribute to the Jaguar XKE Hardtop Roadster.............the second most beautiful car ever built.......next only to the Talbot Lago Teardrop Coupe.

The GTE, introduced in 1960, came out before the XKE, which was introduced in 1961.
