There is no such thing as a big/tall F1 driver... ;)
I'm 6'4 and always had to drive my 308 and 348 without the top or it was kinda scrunchy. My 360 is a tad better, though I'm not taking a day trip in it any time soon.
Sorry, I stand corrected! I should have said there are no SUCCESSFUL (champion-level) F1 drivers! Are any world champs taller than the high 5's? We've met a few at events and my wife - 5'11" in flats - is taller than any of them. Frankly, the thought of "adjusting" your body by sitting in an odd posture is not a good recipe for fun or comfortable car driving UNLESS the only use of the car is to drive it for an occasional short ride. OTOH, that is probably the only use that many of these cars get so heck, who can't deal with being uncomfortable for 30-45 minutes. As Cher (I think) said, "It's not about how you feel, it's about how you LOOK!
Disagree. I’ve taken long drives and at 6’2” found it cozy and comfy. I of course have dynamat , good A/C and comfortable seats. I think it’s an individual thing and blanket comments however well meaning are just misinforming. Sorry Mike but had to respond.
CrownD, sorry if I was unclear about fitting in the car. Per the pic I posted early in this thread, the PO of my car was at least 4-5 inches taller than my 6ft height and it all depends on leg/trunk length as to whether you will comfortably fit. But my view is that if you have to adjust your body into an odd position to drive the car, you don't "fit," regardless of your height. Again, if it's a 20 minute ride to the local bar or whatever, it doesn't really matter but if you are talking several hours behind the wheel, it's a different thing. Neo: Thanks for the James Hunt height - one of my favorite drivers! I didn't realize he was 6ft+.
Every body shape is different. As mentioned, 3x8s have great leg room, but poor torso room/height. I fit fine with my 6'2'' frame, but it was very snug.
Of course you remember also that he had big feet and usually drove with the toe of his racing boots cut off? There were other tall AND succesfull Grand Prix drivers at the time, but no world champion that I can think of; Carlos Reutemann was 6'; Ronnie Peterson was 5'11. And we should perhaps not forget Dan Gurney, who was tall indeed, and won Grand Prix... Rgds
But, according to the criteria defined by Mike in post # 54, they do not qualify: the driver has to be tall AND succesfull: Hunt has a World Championship to his name; Reutemann twelve Grand Prix victories and a vice-championship; Peterson eight Grand Prix victories. Gurney has Grand Prix victories also. I don't mean to be disrepectful, but: Hulkenberg, in 177 Grand Prix, has not even a podium to his name...and for Ocon, we shall see in the future...perhaps? Rgds
Add David Coulthard to the list. 6 feet tall, 13 F1 wins, 62 podiums and runner up to the championship in 2001.
The condition of the bottom seat cushion has a lot to do with the headroom....I am 6 feet with a long trousseau. I fit fine until I had a minor repair done on my seat....and the upholstery shop decided to replace some padding with something much thicker. I took most of it out, but also now I sit leaned pretty far back. I have the 2 inch Hill steering wheel spacer and a Mondial shift lever.....so everything is moved back and fits well. The Mondial shifter helps a lot with reaching second and fourth. Congratulations on your purchase....looks like a beautiful car. Nice trailer too.
