Thanks... I’m heartbroken about what’s happening in HK but cheesed off with the commentators wailing about lost democracy in HK when it never existed (never allowed during British rule and not put in place for the handover). Regina Ip is in government thanks to the ‘functional constituency’ electors; Jimmy Lai’s Apple Daily was hounded by the HK government since the day he started it; the young guy Law has run for cover (UK by the look of the interior) but if you looked behind him in the early protest shots there was a grey haired guy who is ‘Long Hair’ Leung, a democracy activist who was elected to government years ago (90s from memory) and who the HK government did everything they could to flatten him, numerous stints in jail etc. PRC has hammered the coffin nails that the Establishment in HK have been positioning for years... The protestors won a great victory with the withdrawal of the extradition law, unfortunately they then played into the hands of the anti-democrats in HK.

The protestors have not won anything
Their actions have resulted in the current laws being introduced
Their actions gave the PRC no choice but to act in the way that they have
The protesters acted in a way that was foolhardy and set their own cause back irreversibly

They DID win the original fight as the extradition law was withdrawn, but you’re right they won the battle and lost the war by pushing for something that was never going to happen (democracy). I can’t help wonder who/what was egging them on - the old democratic leaders (Martin Lee, Long Hair Leung, Alan ?) would never taken them down that path and now 2 of those old guys have passed away...
Sadly, a lot of older people and most of the business community support the new law; not surprising when you look at the HK government.

Funnily enough Karen the Apple Daily reports what is happening With no censorship , but the SCMP is owned by Beijing so is very skewed...The protests have not helped HKG one bit. They were orchestrated by common thugs doing malicious damage...A lot of people arrested were not even HKG residents...I agree totally with David...They Fuchsed anything HKG had left...It will never be the same...

Absolutely - HK gov’t has been trying to get rid of Apple daily since the day it was started. I’m not one for conspiracy theories but I would like to know what outside forces were prodding the protestors / undermined the steady voices.
As an aside, I still have my “stand down please sir” Giordano T shirt from 1989!

Just caught up with my cousin who's a Qantas pilot, he's flying the last 747 passenger flight on Friday, a joy flight from Sydney to Canberra. He'll be at 1500 feet over the war memorial to "dip a wing" then over the lake and home. Two weeks later he's taking the aircraft to Nevada to be parked in the desert. The end of an era for the airline and the country.

Love the 747. So much more exciting when one of them arrives / leaves than anything else.

You should take a trip down to check out the new light show they’ve installed (designed by some graphic designers I know) looks awesome.
The 747 called ‘Longreach’ was the usual HK ‘bus’ in the 80’s/90’s...
