Small screwdriver is all I needed—plus a stick to prop the lid open while replacing. There is a clip to pry out (only halfway) and the end of the strut pops off.

I replaced mine a couple of months ago also.
It was very annoying when I went to open the lid and it wouldn't stay up on its own.
I purchased mine from Scuderia Car Parts on line. Price was fair (not as low as you paid) but they are OEM parts.

If you have your original struts you might consider having them rebuilt and keep them for the future.
Strutwise out of BC Canada is the only shop I know that does this and its owner, Frank, is a good guy.
He can even add a little bit of extra pressure to make them stiffer.
Hopefully, the shafts are good and nobody as used Vise Grips on them. Even if they have (and they aren't too badly damaged) Frank can work with them.
Quick turn around and great service...... what more can you ask for.

    Regards,
    Gene Greer

Thanks to all of you who contributed comments. With you guidance I was able to replace my struts in 15 minutes. I purchased the original replacements from Ricambi. It was a simple and quick repair.

Awesome job on replacing your struts.

If the ones you took off are in good physical condition, send them out to Frank at Strutwise and you will always have an extra set.
You never know when you might need them......
