Time for a new thread, though it may be a short one depending on what happens.

I heard a suggestion on sports radio for moving the 2020 season to spring 2021, which rather makes sense. If the entire 2020 season is moved five months to the right, the first games could be played at the beginning of February, with the "New Year's" bowl games played on June 1 and the championship decided by mid-month.

Although football is generally considered an "all-weather" sport, if February is considered too cold for the northern conferences, then a reasonable alternative is an 8-game season starting March 1, with all games being conference games and no bye weeks.

    So what do you think?

All I know at this point is that the Power 5 are going to totally screw the "lower" FBS schools by dumping the OOC games. That pisses me off, because my two alma maters were going to play each other, and I really wanted to see that game.

I wonder if the SEC will keep its out of conference schedule....you know as the south has a lot of people that think covid is a hoax and all...

I lived in FL and AL most of my life so I can say that. :)

I think the SEC's decision today to go to a 10-game all-conference schedule, dropping all out-of-conference rivalry games, is extremely disappointing and will prove to be a huge mistake.

The consensus about out-of-conference games seems to be that the greater distance a team has to travel to a game, the more likelihood of trouble. I could understand, for instance, seeing ND-USC cancelled. But Georgia Tech is actually closer to UGA than any of the latter's conference games; same with Clemson-SC and even FSU-UF. So there would be no additional danger in holding those games, unless the SEC just doesn't trust the ACC to do the right things. On the other hand, if South Carolina has to go to Texas A&M, that is a long way to go for a conference game!

US Sportsbooks Halt College Football Betting as Big Ten, PAC-12 Reportedly Suspend Fall Seasons

Right now, there are more questions than answers when it comes to the upcoming college football season.

Will Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields see the field in 2020? A Heisman Trophy favorite, Fields’ Ohio State squad may not play in the fall as the Big Ten has postponed fall sports because of the COVID-19 crisis. (Image: Fox News)

Sports radio host Dan Patrick reported Monday morning on his show that there’s no consensus between the Power 5 conferences in the sport. Reports came out later in the day that the Big Ten and PAC-12 are suspending the fall football because of the coronavirus crisis, with formal announcements planned for Tuesday. Meanwhile, the SEC is reportedly looking to get other teams to join them for a fall season, Patrick said.

As for the Big 12 and ACC, they’re somewhere in-between, although Louisville coach Scott Satterfield told reporters Monday that the ACC wants to play in the fall.

    For now.

What we understand is the ACC is moving forward, and we’re relying on our medical group at the ACC,” Satterfield said “And what they’re are projecting to us is that we’re moving forward with everything. So that’s where we are today. We know how things change and how fluid it is, but that’s where we are.”

That comes after the Mid-American Conference, a smaller Football Bowl Subdivision league, announced Saturday it would postpone all fall sports this year with a plan to resume in the spring.

Other schools aren’t even waiting for their conference to make the call. Old Dominion University in Virginia, a Conference USA school, announced Monday morning that fall sports would be postponed. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Nebraska officials have hinted the Cornhuskers may buck their Big Ten brethren and look to play this fall.

    College Football Popular for Bettors
Even as the uncertainty grew, odds were still available for college football’s championship over the weekend. This comes as the conferences, some as recently as just a few days ago, announced drastically revised schedules for the fall, with regular-season games in some limited to conference-only teams.

PointsBet and FanDuel had taken their boards down by 1 p.m. ET. A short time later, William Hill pulled its college odds. DraftKings also suspended betting on the national championship, but still offered odds on all of the Power 5 conference crowns, except for the Big Ten.

“College football is very popular. It varies a bit, but it is usually a top four sport,” FanDuel Director of Publicity Kevin Hennessy told Casino.org Monday morning. “We are taking things as they come. Once official notices are set, we will make adjustments for our customers.”

While college football is a significant market for sportsbooks, they may not feel as much of a hit from a season that’s suspended or offers far fewer games, since the NBA and NHL will both be playing into October. The NFL also may absorb some of the handle that would have gone to college football.

    Heisman Odds Affected, Too
Odds on the national title or conference championships aren’t the only ones affected by the decisions happening at a team and conference level. It also will have an impact on Heisman Trophy odds.

In some cases, players have taken it on their own to opt out. Last week, Purdue’s all-purpose standout Rondale Moore, a dark horse Heisman candidate, made the decision to focus on the spring NFL Draft.

Before PointsBet suspended bets on college football, Patrick Eichner, PointsBet’s director of communications, said the sportsbook was taking a wait-and-see approach to the season. Canceled games would be voided and refunded, as would any futures bets on players who chose to opt out.

“Fingers crossed they can have a season,” he told Casino.org.

Other players may face similar decisions if schools and conferences try to play in the spring. Do they risk an injury and a precipitous fall from the draft board to pursue a national title or Heisman? And, of course, if a game-changer like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence sits out, that would change the Tigers title odds quite a bit.

Lawrence, though, has been one of the more outspoken players on Twitter over the weekend, helping promote the “#WeWantToPlay” hashtag on social media. He was joined by numerous other college stars, including Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, who has been considered the primary rival to Lawrence for the Heisman this year.

It’s amusing to me how they’re worried about covid which 2 days ago data shows kills .04% of those under 70 but nobody cares about football and cte and permanent brain damage which is near certain as that test a few years ago showed 110 of 111 deceased Nfl players had cte. Too funny

Big 12 says yes to football. SEC expected to as well. So with the Pac12 and Big10 out, there's no effect on the national championship :)

Since the Heisman Trophy vote will have to wait until June, I hope that the contenders who play in the fall (like Lawrence) aren't forgotten by then. Also, the fall teams that will be in the playoff will have to sit around and wait for 5 months before they can play again. I have to believe that will take their edge off, and some players may quit in the meantime. And when will the NFL draft take place? Late June?

Unbelievable 2020 for my Gators. Our stadium is on fire. Happening now and hopefully no one is hurt or currently stuck inside.

Big Ten to Play College Football This Fall Thanks to COVID Testing Breakthrough, Ohio State Big Favorite to Fourpeat

After days of speculation that the Big Ten would resume college football later this fall, the conference made it official on Wednesday.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ohio State has won the last three Big Ten college football championships. Oddsmakers have the Buckeyes as the prohibitive favorite to win it again this year. (Image: Big Ten)

The conference’s 14 members unanimously voted to start play the weekend of Oct. 23-24. The plan is to play eight regular-season games within an eight-week period. Then, on Dec. 19, the Big Ten would hold its championship game, with the winners of each division facing each other.

The remaining teams would play that weekend as well with cross-divisional matchups based on the standings, i.e. the two second-place teams play each other and so on.

It’s a stunning reversal from a month ago, when conference officials as well as several university presidents cited the COVID-19 crisis and the potential long-term health impacts – in particular the development of myocarditis, a heart tissue inflammation – to young adults as the reason for shelving all sports until spring. That move was met with criticism by some conference coaches, lawsuits by some players, and derision from pundits and politicians, including President Trump.

While those critics took a victory lap on social media celebrating the conference’s decision, Big Ten officials cited advances in COVID testing that made them more comfortable moving forward. Players, coaches, trainers and other field-level staffers will undergo daily antigen testing.

That information had been presented to officials by the conference’s Return to Competition Task Force.

Our focus with the Task Force over the last six weeks was to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes. Our goal has always been to return to competition so all student-athletes can realize their dream of competing in the sports they love,” Commissioner Kevin Warren said in a statement.

A player testing positive would undergo a different test to confirm the result. If he did contract the virus, he would be out of competition for a minimum of 21 days. The conference will also benchmark positivity rates by team and population, and if certain thresholds are met, teams will need to suspend practice and play for at least seven days.

Ohio State Big Ten and National Title Favorites
With the Big Ten’s intended return in five weeks, several major sportsbooks went ahead and updated their college football futures boards.

Conference championship odds are now available at BetMGM, FanDuel, and PointsBet. All four have Ohio State as the consensus favorite. The Buckeyes, three-time defending champs, are -250 at BetMGM and PointsBet, while FanDuel lists them at -300.

The initial odds vary significantly from there. Michigan is the +550 second choice at MGM and PointsBet, while FanDuel ranks the Wolverines the fourth choice at +2000. Wisconsin ranges from +500 at FanDuel to +1000 at PointsBet, and Penn State goes from +650 at PointsBet to +900 at MGM.

DraftKings doesn’t have Big Ten conference odds, but oddsmakers there have added the schools to the national title board. Ohio State is now the co-favorite alongside Clemson at +250. The next conference school on the list is Penn State at +2800.

FanDuel too lists Clemson and Ohio State as its co-favorites with +250 odds, Penn State is at +3000. The Flutter book also added Big Ten players to the Heisman futures board. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is now the co-favorite with Clemson’s signal caller Trevor Lawrence at +500.

    Other Conferences Following Suit?
The Big Ten wasn’t the only major college conference to pull out from fall football and other sports last month. The PAC-12 made a similar announcement as well as fellow Football Bowl Subdivision leagues the Mid-American (MAC) and Mountain West conferences.

After the Big Ten’s announcement, PAC-12 Commissioner Larry Scott issued a statement saying the state public health officials in California and Oregon would approve a return to practice if local health officials concurred. That could open the door for the last Power Five conference to announce its fall return perhaps later this week.

Reports also circulated that the Mountain West is likely to follow suit, although some schools may choose to opt out. However, MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a statement the league continues to plan for a spring season for all fall sports.

This week, the national rankings dropped all the teams that weren't going to play this fall. Now that the Big Ten is back, this coming week's rankings will have to put them back!

And if the Pac 12 plays this fall, all the usual post-season events - the Heisman awarding, the bowl games and the national playoffs - can return to their usual times, though perhaps delayed by a week or two.

Pac 12 is in, but only for seven games (e.g. for a slice of that $66 million each conference in the Power 5 splits for the CFP playoffs). They weren't even going to do that, with UCLA, Stanford, Cal and Washington voting no, but Utah said they'd go to the Big 12, and USC said they'd play as an independent this year if the conference wouldn't play any games. What a crapshow, divisional opponents only and one cross-divisional game to end the season. I still think Newsom will throw a wrench in things, and that the UC teams (Cal and UCLA) may quit mid-season if their Board of Regents gets a wild hair...

IMO Pac12 shouldn't be eligible for playoffs if they are only playing 7 games. I was really hoping Big 10 would sit out this season as it would be nice to have a year not hearing about OSU thinking they should be in playoffs and greatest team ever. I need a break from that crap.

I was really hoping USC would tell them to take a flying leap and go independent - they would have had to do so a month back, but USC gets hosed on the Pac 12's TV deal, and other schools in the conference make money that helps them compete for recruits. USC already plays Notre Dame every year (except this one) and could add BYU and a few others to a national schedule and do fine without being hamstrung by the Pac 12, which loves USC's money draw, but hates them otherwise.

Last I looked, Oklahoma had just scored to go up 35-14 with about 2-1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter, so I thought they had the game won.

Next time I looked, Kansas State had won the game 38-35! Wha hoppen? K-State seems to have OU's number these days!

So in two weeks, OU goes from 3rd-ranked to out of the top-25, and Texas blows another late lead and this time can't come back. The Big 12 is looking more like the Tiny 12 right now!

Meanwhile, the "Kyle Show" in Gainesville is making the Gators fun to watch - I'll bet that Kyle Pitts will be first-team All-America by season's end - but that defense worries me, and so do the Aggies! But then, Bama gave up 24 points as well.....
