I have been following the 458 and 488 markets for some time. Right now there are 30 458 spiders for sale on DuPont Registry which isn’t out of the norm and there are 94 488 Spiders for sale. You would think these numbers would be reversed...an indicator of what a great model the 458 is and the demand for it remains high. Use whatever tool you want (autotrader, carsforsale etc.) and you will see similar trends for the 458 and 488.

Or the upgrade is more than people are willing to spend to go to a 488. If they were equal in price then you would have a better comparison.

    Lodovico,

The way I see it, no conclusions can be drawn from numbers alone. We’re talking about the north american market, you’re based in northern Europe and I’m in southern Europe. Three distinct markets with little (most likely nothing) in common with one another, as customers value very different variables in a car and the economic environment between those three very different geographical areas isn’t the same either.

In my country for instance, there are ZERO 458 Spiders for sale.

There are people who sell their 458 to upgrade to a newer Ferrari. There are those who don’t sell their 458, but keep adding newer Ferraris to their collection. There are those who’ll never sell, period. There are those who sell because they voluntarily want to move on, and there are those who were forced to sell inspite of their will.

The 458 stopped being manufactured some 5 years ago. IMVHO it’s too soon to drawn any conclusions and to use that variable alone to judge the greatness of a car.

Regarding your last question regarding collectability, I’d say yes and no. Strictly speaking, if its production wasn’t limited in some way, formally it’s not collectible.

However, in practice, few can argue with the fact that the 458 is one of the greatest Ferrari ever made and so, along with the 355, although they were made in the thousands, no serious petrol head, car enthusiast or collector can afford to do without at least one in his/her garage, hence demand with be steady and strong over time I suspect.

Like an evening black dress for a lady or a tuxedo for a gentleman: there will probably be more beautiful and expensive clothing you can own, but no one can do without at least one of those items in his/her wardrobe.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno
