I wonder if there were issues with debris etc on the track------ https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/151019/red-bull-defends-late-verstappen-pitstop-call

Red Bull Formula 1 boss Christian Horner says there was "no guarantee" Max Verstappen would have made it to the end of the British Grand Prix without his late stop.

Verstappen was promoted to second when Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas suffered a front left puncture with three laps to go on Sunday at Silverstone.

Given a pitstop's advantage over third-placed Charles Leclerc, Verstappen pitted for soft tyres on the penultimate lap in a bid to gain a point for fastest lap.

This gave leader Lewis Hamilton a lead of over 30 seconds, which proved crucial when his front left tyre failed halfway around the final lap.

The Mercedes driver miraculously made it to the chequered flag 5.8s ahead of Verstappen - the Red Bull driver's stop seemingly costing him victory.

But Horner says there was no guarantee Verstappen wouldn't have suffered the same fate as the Mercedes duo, revealing the hard tyre which came off the Red Bull at the late stop had "a lot of cuts in it".

Appears Mercedes let them race today tire stress or not - https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/12041174/mercedes-on-valtteri-bottas-blow-and-bittersweet-british-grand-prix

While Hamilton appeared to keep Bottas at a safe distance behind throughout - just out of DRS range - Wolff admitted Mercedes were concerned by how hard the drivers, who had a healthy advantage to the next car, were pushing each other.

"He was pressurising him," said Wolff of Bottas. "But at a certain point we were looking at the tyre data and thought this is not great, they're pushing each other too much."

But Mercedes still let the title rivals race.

"We didn't interfere," said Wolff. "We just warned them that they could be running out of tyre at the end."

And run out of tyre they did.

    Update on Kvyat and Hulk.

Kvyat-- looks to be something out of his control going into T10. Alpha Tauri will review and investigate what happened.

Hulk-- a bolt got lodged on the engine.

I know that many would like to blame Vettel here. But honestly his car today was nowhere as good as Leclerc's.

So, this weekend, the softs only lasted a few laps, leaving the medium and hard as race tires. The softs did not even last 1 qualifying lap at "full beans".

Next weekend, the softs wound't even be good for a qualifying run, the mediums will last only a few laps, and the cars on hards will need at least 2 stops.

Can't believe Albon got punished for that, they should be punishing Magnussen for not leaving a car width of room, he f'd up the previous turn letting Albon get a run and then turned in like there was nobody there. Albon showed why they won't ditch him by going from dead last on track after that to points. Neither Gasly nor Kvyat showed anything like that ability when they were in the RB and Albon has done it a few times now. He has gotten the short end of the sick on a couple of moves but this time he at least put his car where he wouldn't be the one spinning off if the other guy drove like an idiot.

Vettel missed most of Friday so not surprised at the result, but Leclerc grabbing another podium out of nowhere after a couple of bad races starting to show why they backed him instead.

The team has said as much. We must look at the data between the 2 cars.

Maybe because Charles is better able to help his team make the car perform to his particular liking. Charles adapts. Vettel waits for someone to adapt to him.

Vettel like Kimi, always needs the 'just right for me car.' FA is the standard for get in drive, gain results. Maybe Max and now Charles???
