Greetings! I have recently bought a 1977 512BB in the UK. The car's history includes a copy of a telex from the factory to Maranello Concessionaires (the supplying UK dealer) informing Maranello of a factory visit by the ordering customer who had requested the clear indicator lenses and had been told that he could not have them in the UK for type approval reasons. I think home market (ie Italian) cars had to have the clear lenses and doubtless there were other markets too.

Slightly off topic, but the file also includes another telex from the factory to Maranello reporting the customer had phoned the factory up to threaten that he would cancel his order if he was charged extra for gold wheels. The factory was telling Maranello in the telex that if the wheels were going to be gold it would be Maranello as supplying dealer that would be painting them and, accordingly, it was up to them if they charged the customer.

Even more off topic, I have seen forum chat about whether radios were standard on the carburettor 512BBs. The rather particular original ordering customer for my car had asked the factory during his visit that his car be supplied without a radio and was told that would not be possible but that there would be no charge for the radio they installed. This again is reported in a message from the factory to the dealer.

I believe the carb Boxers were shipped with door speakers and the windshield antenna and associated wiring but that was it

That was my understanding as well which is why the carb cars came with a variety of different radios. Mine had (now in a box) a Blaupunkt Berlin goose neck radio, had the manuals in the owners pouch, others had becker etc.

Didn’t realise that the 365 doesn’t have louvers on the clamshell. Mine gets pretty hot after a drive with louvers.

The 365 had no louvers until chassis 247 then they added a center row and it wasn't even full length. This is build 147.

See attached a copy of the telex from Ferrari to Maranello in 1977 advising it would be too difficult to supply the 512BB I have recently acquired without a radio. I cannot imagine why that would have presented a problem but that is what they said.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. My 76 308 GTB came with three different stereos, one being a Autovox Kaimano. I assume then that this one came with the car from the factory as it was from a similar period in time as this letter.

Living in Australia, Paul's commentary and photos makes owning and maintaining these cars so much more viable for DIY owners like me. Thanks Paul.
