Brazilian ex-F1 and Ferrari sports-car driver, owner and FChatter Frederico José Carlos Themudo "Fritz" d'Orey died today in Portugal after a battle with cancer. He was 82 years-old.

He drove a Masrati 250F in the 1959 F1 season, and drove Ferrari sports cars in important races such as the Sebring 12h and Le Mans, where he had a terrible accident in a 250 SWB which effectively ended his professional career.

While he never achieved a win, or notable racing results, d'Orey was known for being quick, and for being a very charming guy, something that could be observed through his posts here on FerrariChat.

    RIP

    Rest In Peace, Fritz.
I will never forget our conversations and all the racing stories, including the ones you told me about Enzo Ferrari himself.
Memories to cherish. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have met you.

I share with you a couple of pictures taken at the Caramulo Motorfestival, a hillclimb that is our very own little Goodwood Festival. Yet another weekend to remember.
It was unbelievable to see the pace at which you did that hillclimb, with a stock 458, and a second place in the podium !!!
    Thanks for the memories, Fritz.

Condolences to his friends and family........ His tales and endeavours were enjoyed by many on here, he enjoyed sharing his passion here with other Ferrari fans and seemed happy to of settled in cascais, I used to work there years before so could relate to its charm when he spoke so fondly of it with the added bonus of estoril circuit just minutes away helped him feel at home I’m sure. RIP Sir.

    So sad

Fritz was my favorite poster here on FChat and the inspiration for getting an FF, "the best Ferrari"

Someday will get to Portugal in his honor, He offered that anyone here come drive his car.

    Best wishes to his family.

Let me just say that Fritz was an amazing guy...

    want some proof? read on....

I went to Portugal in 2013. Prior to going, I Posted some questions here looking for recommendations for things to see / restaurants, etc....... someone directed me to Fritz.
I messaged / emailed him... me some random dude from a car website.
we had a couple of emails, and he sent me his phone number. I called when there and arranged a time to meet.
Fritz met my wife and I in Estoril... we heard him first (his white V12 FF)....
actually, we were with another couple. We had to ditch them for the afternoon... why? "because I'm meeting some random car guy I met on the internet!"

Fritz drove us out to the Cabo da Roca for some pictures... beautiful.
on the way back to the car, he smiled and asked "do you want to drive?"
    hell yes!
we drove back to his magnificent condo in Cascais (side story... we walked right past his place in the morning, not knowing that is where he lives... my investment banker buddy pointed to the top of a building overlooking the bay and a Moorish castle... and said "I'd like to live right there!"... which is where Fritz lived.
so, I was encouraged to briskly drive his beloved V12 Ferrari back to his place.
we went up to his flat, drank some wine, met his significant other, and had a wonderful time. He told me some amazing car / Ferrari stories (he personally knew Phil Hill among others).
Then he asked if I wanted to drive his 458 spider....umm... hell yeah.
So off he and I went in the 458, top down, back up the same route along the water.
Simply an amazing afternoon / evening.
At the conclusion, he asked me if I was going to post about this on FerrariChat... I said "definitely not!". He asked why... and I said because there will be 100 people lined up outside your door tomorrow!!! He seemed to think that was the best plan.
We exchanged some messages over the years. When I found out he was ill, I volunteered to meet him anywhere in the US to get him the help he needed. He seemed confident in the care he was receiving.
My only regret... His F12 was in the shop!
This was truly one of the most memorable, wonderful experiences of my life! It was an amazing addition to an amazing trip!

    RIP Fritz!
