You're right on this. Unfortunately where I live, there is little access to good engine tuners and re-builders which explains the shipping out of the engine. If the entire set-up was done in-house with the ECUs, exhaust etc all tuned in harmony with the engine, I'm sure we could have gotten more out from the re-build. There were lots of limitations dealing with them in Japan and not even sure if my pump gas could take their state of tune.
Tell me about it! Figured since I'm doing the engine, let's refresh the interior and replace the roof as well. Car was originally still looking good, well kept but I've had her for 11 years, driving her weekly and putting miles on her. So she did look a tad tired and with the roof used regularly, worn marks can be seen on parts of the fabric. So stuck to the same interior combo as I think that's a classic Ferrari and it should look as such. Loved it from day 1 and still never tire of it. Add on were the red stitch and the subtle horsey embossed on the head rests. BTW I had Hill Engg build a prop shaft for me which took about 3 months for them to do their research. Have to put in a good word for these folks as mine was the first to be built and now, it's a readily available part. No more needing to buy a used gearbox just for that shaft. Haha, yes. That's why I started this thread in case any of you guys decide, luckily or otherwise, to go this route. At least you know someone's been there and willing to help the community over here. The 355 IMO is a lovely lovely car. Been a long time since I've had her and still gives me the tingles when I see and drive it which explains why I did what I did.
I'm on the same boat. I have a 550 and a CS now but this subforum is probably my most visited forum period. I've been hunting for one pretty much shortly after I sold mine.
for the times and amount one would use 400rwhp you could spray nitrous For +100hp or even E85 and get Close to 400wrhp for maybe a grand.
It's great to have options, thanks. Other known sources: http://www.formulagt.de/showroom/parts (Germany: price 1900 Euro for non-European residents, 2261 for European residents) Up to 500hp https://hcfautoparts.com/360-%2F-430 I believe these are made in Australia, so maybe cheaper for Australian buyers?
Get it tuned before you blow it up! Motec is what you need. Find a Motec specialist. There are people in Japan with the Take spec running Motec. At the very least get them to mail you a Motec with a pre-installed map from one of those cars as a starting base. Is your car a 2.7 or 5.2? I commend you for taking the plunge. Toda is highly regarded worldwide. It's like getting your engine built by an F1 team. Your engine is built with Toda's special cams. You should sense the power opening sooner and longer. That's the part I am really curious about. Your valvetrain has been upgraded. You should be able to rev to 9k or higher, but don't take my word for it. Ask Toda. Your belts are Toda specific. They look beefier than OE. Should last more than 3 years. OE lasts 6 years. And get some Tubi headers once you find a tuner! I think the few who have the Toda engine are also running Toda 4-1 headers, so the Fabspeeds should be somewhat close. If you want more torque and better sound, Tubi or OE headers. And get a better muffler while you're at it . Tubi Evolution at the very least.
My buddy is a Motec specialist, but he's in California. If you need his contact info, let me know and maybe he can point you in the right direction.
I I was waiting for you to chime in! Agree on all points. Tubi headers will be a nice match for this engine. Looks like a 2.7 engine based on the fuel rails.
Motec Tuner. Contact Frank Siharath. His instagram is "racetune." He tunes for several Ferrari race teams. He is a Motec distributor as well. He should be able to find a proper Motec tuner in the UK. *If you can't reach him there, I have his cell # and email.
Oh. And one more thing regarding the belts I just thought of. Was there a date stamped on them so you know when they were made? It is not everyday someone gets a 355 engine built by Toda . It would suck if they gave you belts that are already 5 years old. For whatever it's worth, I had contemplated getting my Exige engine built with 12:1 compression and the builder/tuner felt California grade (shiet grade) 91 pump gas was doable. I would run 93 at the minimum if I went through with it, so 12:1 isn't too hardcore. But then again, the engine build isn't $50k! More like $5k lol.
Yes it's a 2.7. And as for FatBilly's suggestions, yes nitrous would be great and cheap... if only it were allowed as the reg is extremely strict over here in Asia. So turbos, 430 engine or whatever, was never an option in the first place importunately.
Is there any head or intake work involved or is that purely making more use of the airflow already existing? I've lusted over those toda parts since I got my 355, awesome to see someone take the plunge.
I do agree. It may be running lean at high rpm as it is. I would be surprised if the stock 26lb/hr injectors would not be maxed out if it is making 450hp.
