    Hi everyone,

So when I shipped my car from NJ to FL last month, I lost the spare key. I am currently using the original key and the master key fob (red) – that I don’t want to lose. So my questions are:

    1. I have the original black key fob yet it is dead – do I just need a battery or do I need a new fob? If I need a battery or a new key fob, where do I purchase that is fair?

    2. Where do I get a spare key without getting robbed?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes, new battery should get it back up and running.

    2. Message @gobble on the forum for a quote on replacing the missing fob.

I recall that the Owners handbook recommends changing fob batteries every 6 months, but I'm sure they will last a year or more.

    Battery type A23

    (or V23GA, GP23A, LR23, MN21, MS21).

So I have the A23 battery so I will try it when I get back down to Sarasota.

This what my current ignition key looks like - Still not sure what company makes a reasonably priced spare key - a couple of links didn't work for me - Can you PLEASE resend?

Man I LOVE this site - everyone is so helpful compared to the Benz sites for my daily driver - it's so weird!

Not sure what's wrong with my links, but that's the double nib type key you've shown in your photograph. Unfortunately, I just noticed that even the non-Ferrari-looking reproduction is out of stock at Ricambi.

Maybe you could give Daniel at Ricambi a call to see what the status is. Ph: (336) 499 2500 Unfortunately, as you can see from the What happened to Ricambi? message thread, he might be a little busy.
Anyway, failing that, try Googling "Ferrari part 170010" and see what you can come up with. Some websites show "available to order", but I see at least one overseas site says that they are not accepting overseas customers for this particular item.

    https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/ferrari/170010?id=6997

    https://www.allferrariparts.com/170010.html

    https://www.scuderiacarparts.com/part/5122/ferrari/170010/blank-key.html

    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/550-maranello/suspension-steering/steering-column-19868/170010

There seems to be some crazy price variations. One website is even asking U$300 (with exorbitant postage costs) for a used (already cut) key!

Sometimes the battery contacts are a little loose. I have one fob which needs the battery to be repositioned higher in the holder (with packing underneath it).

So I am in luck with the original black key fob - a new battery did the trick. : )
I called Ricambi and they no longer carry the key blank that I would need to have cut by a locksmith yet they told me to contact these guys in Australia:
    http://www.keys4classics.com
So far they have no responded in 3 days to my email - we shall see.

I will try the lonks above.

Thanks guys - super solid work and SO appreciated!

Interesting. I'm having problems understanding what service they normally provide. "Cutting keys to code"? Do they have Ferrari blanks, or create keys from solid pieces of metal? Where would we get codes? From Ferrari? Or is this normally supplied with the vehicle? I have a document with an "identification code", but I don't know if this relates to the key.

At least they are in the same country as me.

(EDIT: looking at the FAQ on their website, I see it's possible to have keys cut from good photographs, alone)

Did you at least get an automated answer, saying that they will respond within a "few" working days?

I just received an email response from Keys4Classics. I ordered a couple of keys (same design as the ones in the Ricambi photo). As I couldn't find the Ferrari code for my keys, I sent them some good photos of my originals. There is an additional cost of U$10 for this process. It isn't required, but I resized my key photos to match theirs (I may have been out a few pixels).

The prices are very reasonable for this type:
U$19 for one key, U$31 for two.

They offer 3 different designs (prices vary). Unfortunately, not the guitar shape.

Keys4Classics got back to me yesterday:

"Hi TTG and thanks for your inquiry however I am not selling uncut key blanks at this time, the business is pared back and I’m concentrating on cut-to-code services"

Not sure what to do at this point?

At the moment, you can only buy a cut key from them. By "cut", I mean keys you can start your car with.

When you bought your car, did you receive any paperwork showing a Ferrari key code? If not, you'll have to send Keys4Classics a quality photograph of your key. They should send you some photos of the 3 types of key (handle), but for your key, basically there are 3 options:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login
Tell them which number (#) you require. As their business has been downsized, they are not accepting credit cards, but they do accept PayPal and bank transfer.
The #717 is double the price (U$27). I paid less than U$50 for two cut #53 keys with postage! (but my postage was, of course, cheaper).

Can you take another photograph of your key with a plain background (perhaps 3 times the size of your photo above) and send it to them. I don't know if they need photographs of both sides of the key. Just photograph the metal part of the key. I used the zoom function on my iPhone to avoid the photographic distortion of a wide angle closeup shot. I took a horizontal shot for easier size matching.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Here's the photo I sent them. Keys4Classics said the photo was suitable.

I've removed the key shape in my forum photo for security reasons.

Just an update on my order... Two replacement keys arrived from Keys4Classics today and they work well.

Just wondering if I can fit a tiny spare silver cavallino to one of them. Superglue sounds a little risky.

    Ian,

Try carving a recess into the plastic to accommodate the cavallino: Add Cavallino horse to your key

The Superglue should hold it in place well.

I did see that thread, Barry, but I'm not sure if my carving skills are up to scratch. I thought about heating the horse up with a soldering iron and placing it on the plastic, but the excess plastic still has to go somewhere.

I'm confident you can do it, Ian. Just take your time with it. Practice on a piece of plastic if necessary.
