348 Crank Angle Sensor Resistance

All back together along with a little cleanup. Car starts fine and was purring away nicely. Wont really know until I try it out tomorrow assuming weather improved - very heavy rain here at moment :-(

Well awarding myself 1 stooge point thanks to this post and a few others. Pulling out of gas station I got a 5-8 CEL and car almost died twice when coming to a light and would hunt for idle upon startup.

Got under the car and looked at my sensors and sure enough 5-8 looked like it had been through NAM. Kia part number in and no more code she's singing like new.

I also changed out the crank sensor in the engine bay on banks 1-4 since reading here it seemed like a decent one to proactively change...sure enough the harness on that was cracked as well.
For less than 125 bucks replaced all that an onward we go.

The stroke sensor for 5-8 is a pain to get to but I found it easiest to use an actual 5mm Allen key rather than an Allen on a 1/4" drive set. This helped me get it going and then the rest by hand. Overall pretty easy even though I was on my back with jackstands. I replaced everything on my car but the single biggest improvement was the cam phase sensor on cam back of passenger cam bank (your picture above) mine looked fine but they DO start to fail, they are not work or fail like some say. It was responsible for a weird idle hunt. But only some times and gets worse over time. It was the last thing I replaced and that was it. No CEL just a weird idle hunt like a vacuum leak type effect that stabilized as it warmed up and only when cold.

The crank position sensors, you can get to the top one through the passenger wheel well by removing the front fender liner with 1/4 drive socket and a 3 foot extension with a hex head socket on it VERY easily. MUCH easier than from under with the belts in the way etc.

 

Are the original Bosch crank sensors no longer available?

 

The crank sensor is just a simple coil of copper wire on a magnetised core so I wouldn't worry about using a non-Bosch one. Bosch seems to be NLA but, if one prefers to have the sensor from a more reputable manufacturer, one can go for Vemo. plenty of guys here running the kia sensors for multiple years now without issue...17/piece on amazon get it in a day

 

I bought and installed the OEM ones 4 months ago. May have to hunt a bit.

Most certainly, Italian! I have Marelli ignition coils on my 348. However, I wonder why Ferrari did not use Marelli but went for Bosch?

 

I see the KIa part #s for the crank sensors, but what is the optimal source and part# for the cam phase sensor?

 

For a 348, I believe it's a standard Bosch 0232103006

The sensor only (with three pigtail wires) is Siemens HKZ101, HKZ101E, HKZ101S or HKZ121. It cross references to:

By the way, I spoke to 2 different KIA dealers regarding the crank sensors, and that part # (0K9AA 18891) has been discontinued with no supercession.

 

You can probably still get it on Ebay. Also search for Volvo part# 1367645 (Volvos 700 and 900 series).

yeah, a little more follow up:
- saw a cross reference to 1998 Mazda Protege 1.5L. Part available at $146
-saw cross reference to Ford 1996 Escort 1.8L. Part discontinued.

Local Advanced Autoparts cross referenced KIA part# to a Intermotor, their part #CSS554. $73. I ordered 2, will let you know if they work.

 

Crank sensors are easy and cheap to find. It's the cam phase sensor that is harder, specific to Ferrari, and expensive for both 348 and 355.

Update- on Advanced Autoparts cross reference....these are not even close...wrong length and wrong plug.

So I called Ricambi and ordered #130975 (the correct ones!). I should have did that first.

 

I fitted the intermotor ones about 9 years ago and car is still running fine
