Does someone have a source for a 160 degree thermostat for the Dino/Fiat 246 engine?
Tony: I am simply asking for a source. No need to go into the science or reasoning. The owner has requested me to try to source a 160 degree unit.
I was thinking of using a 160 thermostat at one time for engine break-in. The thermostat is the same as a Fiat X 1/9. The Stratos road car (late Dino 246 motor) has the same 4222883 number as the X1/9. Here is one 160 Gates version but many come up in a Google search. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fiat-X19-X1-9-Thermostat-Gates-160F-71C-/332033950374
I ask because its a minefield to find a suitable replacement and whilst companies like Stant, Behr, Gates etc etc and all the other manufacturers, most actually dont recommend anything for the 246 motor, some do offer the X1/9 equiv. However a special warning is made by most that the original Savara / Fiat 4222883 has similar characteristics. Gates 33208 (180F) or 33056 (160F) do not match the dimensions needed to fit the 246 housing. Tony
Tony: Thank you for the information. I will take your advice and carefully research the various thermostats.
All Ferrari Parts lists an original Savara 4222883 thermostat. Says it is rated at 167F. These come up once in a while on Ebay.
no problem, make sure the flange diameter without the rubber ring is 56mm diameter, most gates thermostats are 2.13" (54mm) or 2.3" (58mm). These are no good for the 246 housing. Doesnt sound a lot but enough for the stat to float in the rubber ring and can bind up on the bypass port. See this thread on the topic.
