Does anyone else have one of these beautiful mantel clocks? If so.. How did you acquire it? What do you like about it ? And its approximate year? Ta..
Erm Rob...a pic or two would help for those not quite au fait with what they have on their mantlepiece.
And you too! And me lol. But back to the clock. Astonishing to think it was released in 1928, basically it's powered by the compression and expansion of a sealed cylinder that changes with temperature. So it never requires winding. Plenty on the 'net about them. I've never owned one, personally I think it should have 7 candles on the top and placed in a Synagogue, it's that flashy.
Simon: One of the great masterpieces of design /engineering of the 20th Century! First offered for sale in 1936.. The energy to run the clock is from temperature and atmospheric pressure changes. A temperature change of one degree is enough to run the clock for 2 days! Apart routine maintenance (every 20 years) they have a claimed service life of 600 YEARS. Hand built they take a month to build ! As i said in my opening page..............an object of beauty .. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
They came in a harden cardboard box ,which fitted the clock perfectly ,as poor movement will throw the balance out ..having said that they do have a locking lever . ..
Similar to a classic Ferrari , one should have the (books ,service history and tools) with the Atmos its so important to keep the manual ,original box and original papers..
With books and service history? Allow about a $1,000 to service ! One with no chips on the glass, with books ,original carry box and with the frame undamaged ...many people polish of the clear coat and damage the gold plate /brass plate . I doubt an early two step one with the above could be bought for under $2,500 or buy a new one step one for 15k. There not a clock to buy for capital appreciation IMO..
The all important travel box ...which allows the clock to be moved without upsetting the balance .. Let us reflect if buying ....Buy with the following .. 1.Hand book 2. Purchase document 3.Travel box 4. Glass chip free 5. Frame lacquer unspoiled 6. Service history. Not a clock to be bought of Gumtree/Flea Bay *Please note my clock is NOT for sale* Image Unavailable, Please Login
