Honda to quit F1 after 2021 season

    https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motorsport/breaking-honda-quit-f1-after-2021-season

Honda will quit Formula 1 at the end of next season, citing the need to focus its resources and spending on the development of electric and hydrogen technology.

The shocking news means that Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri – the only two teams other than Mercedes-AMG to score race wins so far in 2020 – will be looking for a new engine supplier for the 2022 season.

The Japanese firm returned to F1 as an engine supplier in 2015, initially with McLaren. That relationship ended after three tough season, with Honda spending a year supplying Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri), before starting to supply Red Bull from 2019 onwards. Honda has scored five wins in the last two season.

But the firm will now quit the sport at the end of the 2021 season, the final year of the current technical regulations. Noting that the car industry is undergoing a “once-in-one-hundred-years period of great transformation”, Honda said it “has decided to strive for the ‘realisation of carbon neutrality by 2050’.”

The firm added: “Towards this end, Honda needs to funnel its corporate resources in research and development into the areas of future power unit and energy technologies, including fuel cell vehicles and battery EV technologies, which will be the core of carbon-free technologies.”

Honda recently launched its first electric car, the e, and added that the learnings it has made developing the 1.6-litre hybrid powertrains used in modern F1 will benefit its new Innovative Research Excellent, Power Unit and Energy centre.

No wonder they are called the Okey Cokey players in F1.

I bet Horner is spitting bricks at the moment, Fell out with Renault, Ferrari and Mercedes will not supply him. Looks like they may have to develop their own hybrid ICE.

If Renault pull out, which is highly likely, Mercedes possibly, then F1 is stuffed as we know it.

The upside is the FIA may need to banish the current V6 turbo engines to the scrap bin and let smaller guys in with much less complicated engines. V12,s please

I think F1 will eventually become a spec series like Indy cars.

You have 2 different engine makers supplying all the teams. Maybe even one engine maker like we have one tire supplier. Maybe its a three year contract and they choose engine suppliers. Or just label slap them like Honda and Chevy do for Indy cars.

Its getting too expensive to continue on this path. The racing isn't any better even if the "technology" improves. IMO, this is where F1 failed. It wanted to have the best technology but it forgot about what people like about going to a race or watching racing on TV.

It looks like Red Bull is in trouble now, with no engine supplier for its 2 teams beyonf 2021.
According to FIA Rules, engine builders undertake to supply all the teams.
That worked so far, with Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes and Renault sharing the burden, by supplying 2 or 3 teams each.
With Honda withdrawing, that will change the scenery. in 2022, not one, but 2 teams will need engines.
By 2022, Mercedes will be supplying 4 teams (Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin, Williams and McLaren), and that must be enough.
Ferrari will supply 3 (Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Haas), and probably can't do no more.
Renault will have no customer in 2021, and on the face of it, and SHOULD be made to supply engines to Red Bull and Alpha Tauri. How ironic that is !!!
Renault and the Red Bull organisation have been uneasy bedfellows in the past and went through an acrymonious split.
So, the situation will be interesting to see in the following months.

If F1 becomes a specs series like Indy, the World Constructors Championship will need to be replaced by a World Teams Championship then.

I cannot see any car manufacturer interested in participating in F1 as a specs series, unless as an engine supplier perhaps.

That would be a pity, IMO.

The other option is they throw away all the electronics and do with simpler engines. I've said for a long time they should ELIMINATE wind tunnels and just go with computer models of a given software given free to everyone. BUT let people test in the real world more.

If making the engine was cheaper, then a lot more makers would want to be involved.

If you look at the last race -- what was the POINT? The only thing interesting was if Hamilton got a time penalty or not and would he end up 1st or 3rd. Is that really "racing"?

It doesn't matter how fast they go around. What matters is what the spectacle is. Racing is a sport but it seems more like a computer game now.

Well look at it this way.

Honda announces its quitting and really, no one really cares. They will figure something out.

Imagine if Ferrari said it was quitting what the reaction would be to the future of F1.

    There's a reason why F1 needs Ferrari.

I cannot see any engine builder/constructor stepping in at short notive (before 2022), even with simplified/cheaper technical rules.

It's up to the FIA to sort out this mess.

Great points, it’s been an engineering championship for years now, drivers are secondary. Simpler engines and standard front and rear wings would be a start...

Red Bull Engine Supply Deal Following Honda’s Exit
Honda has announced that it will leave the sport at the end of the 2021 season.

    by Suliman Mulhem

    October 2, 2020October 2, 2020

    http://www.gptoday.com/full_story/view/738770/Renault_Could_Be_Forced_Into_Red_Bull_Engine_Supply_Deal_Following_Hondas_Exit/

Honda’s decision to leave Formula One at the end of next year means Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri will need to find a new power unit supplier.

With Mercedes boasting the strongest and most efficient power unit in Formula One, they are likely to be Red Bull’s preference.

However, it’s unlikely that the Silver Arrows would agree to such a deal, at least not with Red Bull Racing, as giving them Mercedes power would potentially put them right on their tail and perhaps even cost them Championships.

Ferrari is another option, but they currently have the weakest power package on the grid by some margin, so it’s difficult to see why Red Bull would settle for this.

Furthermore, Ferrari may also not be willing to supply the Milton Keynes-based team, especially if they are expecting to make a big step forward with their 2021 power unit.

For now, it seems a reunion with Renault is the most likely scenario.

Red Bull enjoyed a period of dominance from 2010 to 2013 – during which they were, of course, powered by Renault – but the partnership quickly soured in 2018 after Red Bull began to publicly criticise the French manufacturer.

However, even if neither party is particularly keen on a reunion, it could be forced upon them if Red Bull is unable to find another power unit supplier.

This is because, in such circumstances, the supplier with the fewest customer teams must step in and act as a power unit supplier of last resort.

And, with McLaren switching to Mercedes power next year, Renault will only be powering a single team, so they might have no say in the matter.

Honda is also leaving F1 because they realized that the money needed to beat Mercedes is totally unreasonable.
The irony is that if mercedes withdraws also it will considerably weaken the sport.
    Seven years of sports waste.

F1 has a problem. Not Red Bull. F1. Red Bull can easily afford to lose F1 as a platform. F1 can not.

What is F1 with a 8 team grid? **** all.

Ball is in your court, F1. YOU made this formula happen. YOU insisted F1 would become ''cheaper". YOU insisted F1 would become more "relevant".

**** all manufacturers came knocking as you hoped. Cost Skyrocketed.

    Fix it.

The agreement decrees that the engine supplier with the least teams must supply a team that has no engine.

Therefore Renault MUST deliver engines to Red Bull and Alpha Tauri.

    Case closed.

Yes, that's what the rules say.
But forced to work together Renault and Red Bull won't cooperate in harmony.
Too many harsh words have been spoken in the past.
