My Ferrari 458 has a very strong smell of gasoline. At first I thought it would go, but 700km and 4 weeks later it is still there and stronger than ever. My 458 has done about 4000km and I got it may 2011. The reason I am not rushing to my Ferrari dealer is for 2 reasons, one I don't know if it is dangerous to drive the car and it is about 6 hours away(it's in a diff. Country) please if anyone knows say it ASAP thanks :)

Calling your dealer first is the best thing to do.

that's really interesting, gas is in the back and ventilation system is in the front (i think)

Are there any variables that you can control that change the smell?

IE turning on air conditioner, running at hot temperatures vs cold?

Call your dealer. The main fuel pump and sending unit is in back of your seat

It is not normal. Definitely call your dealer and be prepared to trailor it there. Meanwhile there may be some other diagnostics you can note.

Is there any evidence of a leak. (The bottom panels will prevent small leaks from spilling on to the floor, but look in the engine compartment with a flashlight.

Will the odor appear if you only turn on the ignition. This will activate the pump and injectors but the flow will not be continuous.

    1) do not start or run the car

    2) call your dealer IMMEDIATELY

Don't mess around with this. Is it dangerous? YES.

To answer some of the questions, the smell only come when the car is on, it is stronger on the left side of the car, and the fuel pump is on the right. When I looked at it I couldn't see any trace of gas. What I am going to do is call the dealer and ask them to come. Thanks for all the care :)

Good to remember that a gallon of gasoline has about the same explosive energy as about 50 sticks of dynamite, depending on the stick.

Do not drive the car. I see you are in Morocco: Do not smoke near it. Get to your dealer.

Near as I can tell, there are four fuel pumps in the 458, two mechanical ones driven by the cams for the direct injection, and two electric ones. They are all dangerous.

Mechanical pumps #8 in first parts catalog drawing. Electric pumps #1 and #8 in the second parts catalog drawing from Ricambi's online parts catalogs.

You 458 owners are fuel pump rich, to say the least. The electric pumps cannot generate the high pressures required for the direct injection, hence the mechanical, high pressure pumps shared with the California. The California does without the electric pumps, but then it does without dry sump lubrication, too.

Thanks a lot guys, you probably just saved me a 458 :) and it is rare to find someone who doesn't smoke ^^. And I am wondering, why would it be dangerous to smoke near it, I wouldn't but just wondering?

    The gas can ignite.

    Static electricity can also ignite.

YY- Gasoline itself is not flammable, but the vapor is. So the smell you are getting is gasoline vapor, which can be ignited by any open flame source and sometimes even by an electric current or very small spark.

When you get a gasoline fire, the vapor is burning, evaporating more gasoline, which burns. Next flammable rubber and other soft parts burn, and, when the temperature gets hot enough, the aluminum bodywork catches on fire. At that point, it is good to have a reputable insurance company, because she is gone.

Hi... I was searching for clear answer but unfortunately no one had the same issue... And I am sure your dealer never told you about what was the problem...
Anyway I have the same issue and in the future if someone can read my answer and whoever have the same ferrari 458.. He need to check out the fuel filters cap... Normally its cracked by the time and because of the engine heat.... You may pay around £900 for both left and right fuel filter aside of labour charge.... And I believe you can smell the fuel from the left side of your car.
I already change both sides even the other side is OK... As my friend said better to pay than lose the whole car.
Hope this answer helpful to everyone have the same issue.

I love questions like this… If you owned a Honda accord, and you suddenly smelled gas every time you drove it, what would you do? You would call a dealer/ shop and have it repaired. No different with the Ferrari. It’s a car. Hope it turns out OK

    You're welcome.
This is a photo and you can see the amount of fuel coming out ones the car is on... For the first moment I thought its only seal problem but it was the complete fuel pump filter...
