Hi everyone, A very sad day 1999 F1 360 with later TCU I was driving along, slowing for a junction and I heard what I though was an emergency siren behind me (was actually a noise from the car). Stopped at the junction, went to pull off and the car was juddering badly, making a sound like belt squeal and I could feel hesitation in the drivetrain. The car still moved under its own power but with the belt squeal noise and other crunching noises. I immediately pulled over and awaited recovery. The car will move freely in neutral and appears to still be selecting all gears. I'm trying hard to give a description but because I stopped immediately I didn't get much chance to hear the noise(s). I'm reasonably handy with tools and have a few mechanic friends so would like to do what I can to repair or work towards a repair here. Is there anything you can suggest to try to pin point what has gone wrong here? Thanks guys.
First thing would be look at the drive belts and pulleys/ tensioners.. see if something seized up Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
Hi flash, Will check as a matter of course however stationa Thanks flash. Stationary the car will Rev with no issue. Nasty noises only ensue when trying to drive. Could this still suggest drive belts etc ?
If it revs ok then would not think it was belt related, nor is it going to be alt, ac etc. the brakes are not stuck by any chance ? Worth checking
Jack it up and check the drive half shafts turn ok, this will check the wheel and drive output bearings. After that you are looking into the trans
If engine runs and revs without any funny business while you are in neutral, then engine is fine. If the car allows you to shift and the F1 fluid pressure is good, then the pump is OK. That leaves gearbox, differential, axles, and clutch. Does it make any noise while you are stopped, shifting from N to 1 or 2? Or does it only make noise when the car is in motion, be it slow or fast? You might want to fill out your profile to say where you are from.
Actually if you can get it up off the ground, get the lower tray off and take off the perforated inspection panel beneath the clutch. You can take a manual wear of the clutch..
Here’s a video guys... sounds dreadful The ASR - ABS problem has been intermittent for about a week prior so don't think this is related.
No noise when stopped, you can select all gears as normal. Car makes constant noise as above in video, haven'd driven it fast in current condition but suspect the noise would continue! Location is in Glasgow, Scotland UK
Al+1 as you said .. something from diff to wheel ..bot clutch .. half axle , bearings, brakes most likely Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
Actually, all things considered, this is good news. Anything involving removal of the gearbox and going inside the gear box is expensive.
Thanks everyone. When we tow'd the car home in neutral there was no noise to be heard. It is only in gear (any gear by the looks of it) that the noise occurs. Does this help whittle it down? As presumably the half shaft and wheel bearings would make noise all the time. On load is when it is worst for definite.
Once you know it is not bearings then drop the oil from the gearbox and see if the oil is emulsified or any water comes out. This model is known for gearbox cooler failures, as i understand it the cooling water is used to cooler the gearbox oil. Also check the cooling water level and look for oil on the surface.
Did check this Mike, no evidence of heat exchanger failure. I'd only changed the box oil around a month ago too, no metal / coolant at that time. Am I correct in thinking it can't be any bearings as the noise doesn't occur without a gear engaged?
Explain a bit more. 1) the car can be in Neutral rolling down the road without making any noise? 2) you can shift into a gear, up and down. 3) Once you are in a gear, and the car is in motion, the noise ruckus came back? Is that what you are saying?
Hi Yelcab, Good idea. Here's a recap of where we are : 1. Car can be in neutral, rolling down the road and not make any untoward noises. 2. Car can shift up / down gears. Reverse works fine too. 3. Once in a gear and moving, the nasty noises begin. Noise is constant whether turning left, right or straight.
What is my best course of action here then guys? Do I : A : Find a replacement gearbox/diff? B : Remove the gearbox and hand over to a specialist?
Well, now that you cleared that up. So sorry it is inside your gearbox. At this point, you have to remove the gearbox out of the car, open it up and see what is making that noise. It would be easier to find a used gearbox for a swap, but only if you are sure of its functionality. Otherwise, handing the old gearbox over to a rebuilder is likely a better option. Make sure you are sitting down when he gives you the estimate.
Thanks Yelcab, I thought as much unfortunately. There is a complete box for sale right now with 30 days warranty for £5,500 so this may be the route to go
Just concerned about racking up a collection/ labour bill and having to in the end shell out for a replacement box anyway Mike. I would imagine parts / labour could likely exceed £5.5k pretty quickly
