I took a few hours today and entered all the service records for my Dino into a Google Sheet. Over 300 line items, the last 36 years in my ownership.

Is there any interest in my posting this?

    Here's the link:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Uo8CscBKazVZ5385EhM6nqvCOpPqKx0sqXRpN_vdufE/edit?usp=sharing

    A few notes:
    - All values are in Canadian dollars.
    - Sometimes taxes are included, sometimes not.
    - Items originally in in US dollars are expressed in US dollars. I didn't bother to look up the exchange rate at any given time.

To me, this car is one of the most valuable Dinos on the planet. It's good enough to not be embarrassed on the concours field (it will never be a winner!), but ready to be driven anywhere without worrying about the miles. The true magic of the Dino is in the driving, not in being a garage queen.

Feel free to ask questions and make comments!

Fascinating stuff. One thing I found interesting is that it appears as though the engine was re-built 3 times in about 40K miles. Seems like a lot especially for a car that gets used as regularly and serviced as often as I know you do. Maybe just some bad luck.

It was rebuilt twice. Once at 76,244, then again at 92,618.

The first time was after a set of hot laps at Watkins Glen. It was a warm day and there are a lot of G forces in "the boot". The theory is that one side of the engine got starved of oil. A piston seized and its connecting rod went through the side of the block. To prove it was no accident, a friend of mine had the same problem a lap later in his 308GT4. Both cars ended up at the same point in the track with coolant dribbling out the exhaust pipes.

The second time was on a drive to Ottawa. The car simply lost power. The cause, according to the mechanic who did the second rebuild, was that the cylinders had been rebored too much in the first rebuild. The pistons were too small for the bore: that was overcome by using oversized rings. They simply gave up over time.

I've added a few notes. If you see a black triangle at the top right corner of a cell, click on it for a bit more info or a story.

Wonderful record keeping and a great story ! Thanks for sharing.
I live just outside Guelph, perhaps we could arrange a drive day with a few 'local' Dino's

I would definitely show up for that. My guess that there are 10-20 Dinos in the Toronto area.

Excellent record, thanks for shearing. Could you sum it up and let us know the total maintenance cost and cost pr. year? It could be interesting. Could also be cool to see labor vs spare part cost. To me it looks like an expensive car to keep on the road, but I suspect a lot of the expense is labor related.

    Best, Peter

It's in Google Sheets, so you're welcome to download it and process the data any way you want.

It hasn't been cheap to maintain properly, but the value has gone up enough I doubt I'll lose money at the end of the day. Meanwhile, it pays fabulous annual dividends in wonderful experiences and people.
