mc20 testing at fiorano. is it possible that ferrari helped developing the new maserati v6? at least nettuno's f1 technology ? Image Unavailable, Please Login photo- simone masetti
We’ve had this exact discussion a few dozen pages ago, but yeah they won’t let it happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well they didn't seem to have a problem with that when they belonged to the same group as Alfa with its rather low in the market positioned 4C.
MC20 was supposed to be the CF chassis Alfa, no? Even the engine is an Alfa QF-based V6 which is itself based on the Ferrari 90 deg. V8. Probably needed to move it to Maserati brand to make the price point palatable for buyers. Also, don’t see how the Roma was supposed to be a Maserati and using a Ferrari aluminum platform, suspension and engine. This same story was used for California which, yes, stopped development of a Maserati drop-top but that car was steel and had a soft top.
As I wrote above, this 90 degree V6 looks Alfa V6-based and was developed from a Ferrari V8. The promotional videos for the MC20 claim the engine was developed in-house at Maserati.
Exactly what I had thought as well. Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa are not linked anymore apart from Ferrari possibly selling engine tech to Alfa/Maserati to subsidise its costs.
Please consider the Giorgio project (and the V6 Quadrifoglio) was developed by a team of Maserati and Alfa people (with some external input from Ferrari). Former Scuderia engineer Paolo Martinelli was the head of Alfa-Maserati engine dept (I'm not sure he's still in charge today) The Nettuno engine has been developed by the same people, now working exclusively for Maserati (since high-level orders stopped any development on high-end Alfas). However I don't know if Nettuno has seen direct input from Ferrari. Today Maserati is fully capable to design and build engine in-house (a new assembly line will be soon working in the historical Maserati plant). Inviato dal mio BAH-L09 utilizzando Tapatalk
Is it just me or does something seem off about the way it goes through the corners? Like it’s overly fidgety, constantly fighting under steer and looks heavy? The sound is unimpressive compared to the LB V6 mules we’ve heard running around.
It kinda seems like the Roma was taken from Maser in concept only. Maser had that front engine classic looking GT concept car and Ferrari was like, oh good idea thanks we’ll develop a similar concept for us.
Agree, the Roma is very Maserati in concept. But it’s also a pure 2-seater. The Alfieri concept which was (is?) supposed to presage the Granturismo replacement was a 2+2, so not sure how someone can argue that the Roma was based on a Maserati.
If the LB V6 is indeed a 120 deg. design, and so even firing, it has a good chance of sounding better than the odd-firing V6 of the MC20 which shares the same layout as the awful sounding current F1 cars.
From what is audible from the spy videos, I would even say there is a certain similarity to a V12 sound.
Of course they still are linked. Same main shareholders and Alfa is Ferrari’s B team in F1 for example
The exhaust flames depicted in the video link photo do not seem possible since the car has GPFs (wishful embellishment it seems); and at the time of the video the air temperature in Maranello was about 7C (45F) and wet, the hard to tell how "fidgety" the car was in the corners since the tires are not able to build heat or much grip.
Main shareholders of Alfa are going to be French now, with the Peugeot-Fiat merger... while Ferrari main shareholders are still Italian (in both cases, the ownership is actually mainly public, but the small shareholders have limited influence).
