Hi guys, I have an interesting issue in my 2004 360 spider. The fuel gauge is reading full most of the time. Even during a drive of 300 km. Sometimes while driving I see some bars going off (see picture) but after a couple of minutes those bars are coming back and it's showing full again. Most of the threads I searched are about fuel gauge showing empty, but mine does the opposit. So anyone any ideas? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mine did the same thing, I actually ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere. I replaced the sending unit and all is good. I believe it was a $35 part from scuderiacar parts. Let me clarify.. Mine read full it didn't have bars in the middle go away and then reappear. But I'm assuming it doesn't ever get below those, correct?
Thanks, yes I dont't think it get below those and replacing the sending unit wouldn't harm on a 16 year old car. Yesterday evening I removed the LH access panel and released the connector on top of the fuelpump. Then I looked at the fuel gauge and I expected to see no bars, but to my surprise the 2 outer bars were still active.
I'm not an expert but guessing you have something going on in the dash itself with the bar flickering.
Typically fuel senders are designed to read 10 ohms and full and 300-400 ohms at empty. You might have a short in the circuit. I would measure resistance at the sender work backward to the gauge.
Thanks, I've measured it by taking out the old sending unit. It was sort of stuck at 4 ohm and when I moved the arm the meter gave zero or strange values. So the old sending unit was indeed at fault and I replaced it with a new one. But I think there still is the other problem. While my sending unit was out, I turned the key one position to see what would appear on the dash. To my surprise again the outer bars of the fuel gauge where on. (see picture). After installing the new sending unit I now see the tank half full, but the outer bar is still showing. Anyone seen this before? Is my cluster or fuel gauge meter having an issue? that looks like an instrument cluster problem, rather than a fuel sender problem. It is a stand alone unit and can be replaced. I did it about 1 year ago while i have a spare cluster. I have no idea where you can buy the stand alone unit separately though.
