We can all sit here and debate as much as we want, but alas...the FIA is run by a bunch of clueless morons. Which is why on one hand they are talking about keeping costs low, and on the other, having expensive, stupid vacuum cleaner noise engines running around with fake push to pass buttons, and a tyre company who has no idea how to build racing tyres.

At the 2004 Indy F1 race (Schumacher won) I was standing directly behind the cars at the end of pit lane as the drivers practiced their standing starts during Friday practice. It was truly awe-inspiring. The sound now is so disappointing.

Plus 1 on Pirelli, it is actually counter productive for their image. The only car I have Pirellis on now (or at least Longstone's remade version) is from 1961. The fast modern road cars have all migrated to Michelins. F1 should maybe do the same.

    Bloated.

I'm also not sure that big batteries sitting under fuel cells is a good idea. Look at Grosjean's explosion.

It is not the size of the battery nor the motors, what is making the F1 cars so long is aerodynamics !!
The longer the car, the more downforce the underside can generate.
The more sealed the underside is the more downforce can be generated (slots on the edge of the underside.)
The longer the car the harder to make the suspension nimble, especially at lower speeds.
It has taken several years for Mercedes to perfect the nimbleness along with the high downforce levels.

Sure. Mercedes have aced the aero and stability. George confessed "this car is a work of art" following his solid debut.

I was referring to the detonation dynamics of batteries packed under fuel cells from an explosion POV.

It is not clear that the batteries cause the explosion any more than the front of the chassis getting detached from the rear of the chassis while making sparks as it punched through the armco.

    It's curious isn't it.

I cannot recall such an explosion on impact with the V10's.

Let's just say that you don't like the FIA, but they are far from being "a bunch of clueless morons".
Witness the way they managed to hold a comprehensive world championship in 2020, when most of the other sporting authorities have caved in and given up.
This year, they probably saved F1 in spite of huge difficulties, and maintained life in 10 teams. F1 didn't disappear from our screens either.
That we have something to discuss on this forum is mostly thanks to the FIA. Please credit where it is due.
OK, you don't like their F1 rules, so what ? No rule will ever satisfy everyone.

We were at the British GT rounds earlier this year. Close racing !
They also sound better than current F1.

None of the V10s went through the armco and broke into two pieces, either.

The last similar type of explosion I recall is Gerhard Berger, and that was 1989 I believe.

Structurally stronger outside of the safety cell.

I've found similar in high end street cars. Current designs are built to disintegrate outside of the carbon tub.

    A V12.

So the V10 designs appear to be the sweet spot in this regard.

I think the safety improvements in the time since Berger's crash are more relevant to being not so explody when crashing rather than configuration ;).

Oh common...beside 2020, nothing else they have done made the sport any more 'sporty'. Bar safety issues.

    I disagree:
    a) mandate a 96" wheelbase (down from 120" typical now) this will make the cars more easily turned into corners, and have less aerodynamics.
    b) no goofy aero devices around the car (barge boards, nose skirt, canonda effect, blow diffusers, to the floor extending beyond the vertical parts of the body.)
Basically where car technology was just prior to the Schumacher era; but:
    c) go back to the V10s (who cares about saving gas--you can go carbon neutral with gasoline made from plants.)
