    An airplane that dirty would have gotten a US wing commander fired in the olden days. We always had to make sure our airplanes were clean if they were going to Langley AFB, then TAC, later ACC, HQ.

    They left early on bombing runs and were used as visual aids to help the formations set up for the raid. They then returned to base. From what I've read online, they were damaged/stripped planes that were no longer useful for bombing runs.

    I think I saw dozens of those yesterday on my hike into the mountains west of Tucson. Here's a photo I took from up there looking east and down at Davis Monthan. 250mm first shot and then cropped image of same photo since Fchat can't post full res for everyone here to zoom.
