The red button is to test the "Stop Brake Failure" light. When you push it the light and buzzer should come on.

Has anyone used an LED bulb or kit (that uses all the original mounting hardware) to change the headlights and high beams to LED ? If yes, can you suggest any you may recommend? Mine are out... So is it seems like a good time to swap.. plug and play preferred. I am not looking for a super bright white or blue, but a more traditional hue. Thank you,
    Richard

In my humble opinion keep it original...and no I have never heard of anyone doing that modification.

Thanks Marc, to be clear.. I want the original look.. but with less watts through the system. I do not intend to modify anything (not even the rear cups.. which seems to be the most challenging part). I was hoping for effectively a new glass lens (with reflective inner surface behind the bulb) and then an LED bulb I can insert. LED Bulbs these days are amazing if you can find the right "colour of white/yellow"..and they often consume less power... A bonus for any older car... As long as heat does not become a concern.

So. Although I'd like an update path... I am also open to the original sealed beam style...mine are simply tired so not as bright as they could be.. two are the originals in fact! Two have been replaced a while ago with the correct model - "Carello" I think.

Still hoping for a newer solution.. but don't want to be the first test subject if I can help it... Getting those lights out is a pain!
    R

Ps. I am guilty of over thinking/trying to over engineer (no I am NOT an engineer, but when I come back to life.. perhaps next time)

Haven’t done the headlights/tail lights, but I have now replaced all the dash and interior lights with LED.

Right, since this is not my field of specialty and is an intriguing question and since just today I was communicating with Andy Heywood head of McGraths Maserati, one of the very best classic Maserati techs in the world (who has also today volunteered to judge at KHAMSIN CINQUANTA) I asked him:

One quick question Andy. In the Khamsin forum several owners restoring cars in Europe, the US and Canada are discussing fitting LED lights for outer lights and dashboard.

Can you let us have your thoughts on it

    -1 with a technician's hat

    -2 with a judge's hat.

    Hi Marc,

From a performance and safety point of view, LED lights are a good idea. We have fitted LED bulbs on a few cars and certainly the intensity of them is far better than before. You have to be careful that you use the correct type for the application as it can be a case of too much of a good thing (especially with instrument lights) and in some cases you will need to change the flasher relay when fitting them on indicators/turn lights. So, better to go to the car lighting specialist who understands. They are expensive but in most cases they run cooler and certainly last longer.

For the Concours field they are in my book a black mark. Not original and even though you can get ‘warm glow’ instead of bright white bulbs, they are still clearly not the same. It’s like replacing your chandelier with a row of spotlights…. They might work better but they aren’t the same thing.

And anyway, remember the road test on the original Ghibli when it was new by the English racing driver Innes Ireland, who had to put a postage stamp over the high beam warning light because it was too bright at night!

    Best,

    Andy

    END OF QUOTE

My 2 cents...the chandelier/spotlight reference says it all. Note also that there is potential danger, don't set fire to your car by creating electrical issues....My personal 2 cent view is only modify when safety can and needs to be improved. Ok I admit I like Boralogists idea of liberating the exhaust sounds;-) But that is about it....unless I went gaga and bought the light blue hot rodded Khamsin and ordered a 7 liter 7 speed box blueprinted engine and gearbox;-)

....My personal 2 cent view is only modify when safety can and needs to be improved.

Somebody please explain to me how you can drive safely at night when the your speedometer and temperature gages are NOT visible---as was the case with my Euro Bora---which led to my LED solution.
    See my posts 8109/8110.
BTW---my K has no such issue!

As to Andy's claim that this is an expensive mod---if 20 bucks is expensive for fixing a major safety problem on a Bora/K---then I have nothing else to add!

Those of you who follow my posts know that I am not your PC guy---and no fan of McGraths.
EVERY---speaking of first-hand experience---Maserati V8 that walks through their doors is immediately judged to be in immediate need of a major engine rebuild!

So many sane alternatives out there!

    Just my 2 cents.
    Please ignore at will.

    Thanks.

BTW---if anybody is following a US K's TOTAL euro transformation---
We found her timing to be at 6 deg BTDC today---now at 11 deg.
Yes. I prefer 1-2 deg plus spec.
    Much livelier!

Tomorrow all bushings plus 6 new MIE shocks!

    So much fun:)

    Really EVERY one? :)
I think I understand what you mean but on the other hand I must admit that I was impressed by the photos in post #2717 (page 109) of Khamsin #341 at McGrath, especially the one I reposted below. Like Marc says in that post it is "being reassembled like a Swiss watch". Looks great in my opinion although I have never seen their work in real life, only on photos, I've never visited their company.

Yes Nick Aaldering called me when the owner brought the car to him to review. It should be put back to celeste its original color. Dash partly in wood (a modification made after it left the factory). There were some statements that it had been bought used by actor Jean Paul Belmondo but the previous seller did not supply any proof. It has been around Paris for some time but I have never seen it in person.

It might actually drive pretty nice if it's got a good automatic. I assume the Holden V8 is well tuned too. But what's not clear is if the LHM system is still there in all it's glory? That engine compartment looks rather uncluttered so I'm going to guess no ...

You could always drive it only at night so as not be embarrassed;)

I think Hella makes LED replacement headlamps that look like and fit exactly in the place of old style sealed beams.
