Hey FChat Writing here from California. Currently own a 458 and have a leaking shock on the driver-left. Couple of questions. 1. I'm noticing 3 part numbers. - 255863 (front) - 255864 (rear) - 310450 (front shock but with lift) Does that sound accurate, or are all of them truly the same? 2, These look to be Ohlin or Delphis. Is there an option to go direct for the replacement? 3. I've also seen some speaking about rebuilding shocks. Seems like the way to go especially since there is less waste. Anyone have experience or recommendations for this? Thanks a lot, guys.
The part numbers sound right, but I don’t know for sure. Here is a place for rebuilds. http://www.madenoracing.com/more-news/328/Ferrari-458-MagneRide-shock-absorber-rebuild-services/ I want to use them, because it sounds so much better than stock, but the problem is turnaround time. They are not slow, but most shops I know won’t be thrilled to remove my shocks and keep my car occupying a lift until they can be sent back. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
A metal rod with a couple of collars welded on each end will replace the shocks to allow your car to be rolled around in the mean time.
I've rebuilt Ohlins shocks (motorcycle racing forks) in the past. It's somewhat of a technical job. You typically need the seals and some fairly specialized tools to do it right. In some cases, oil vs air levels can be involved. I'm not sure if Ferrari uses magnetic damper type fluid as well, but if so I would guess that makes the job even more involved. Also, compressing the springs on the 458 coilovers is no joke either. Ray
Here are a couple of videos from my YouTube channel that you might find interesting: That is an old one showing the process I used to rebuild the Ohlins forks. You'll wanna skip through a lot if it... That one shows a bit from when I was lowering the front of my 458 down 15mm. You can get an idea of what's involved. Be real careful with those aluminum collars if you don't know what you're doing Search Ferrarichat for several threads on adjusting the collars where things have gone horribly wrong for people. Ray
458s have magnetorheological shocks, licensed from Delphi. The fluid inside reacts to magnetic fields, allowing the damping to be varied. Read about them here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetorheological_damper I also seem to recall being told that the OEM fluid tends to be abrasive and hard on seals, which is why they develop leaks. I don’t know if the fluid was improved in later cars. Check out the link at Madeno Racing above. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Is the shock leaking with results on the floor or sweating? Sweating is something you should be able to live with as it’s not uncommon.
In my case just sweating, I think. If so, I’m not in a great hurry to have them rebuilt. Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
