I seem to remember reading years ago the program was gifted to McD due to the experience they have with Squid aviation.

No doubt the landing gear for the F/A-18 will have to handle the stress from repeated traps on the boat.

In the end the F/A-18A was essentially a completely different airplane from the F-17 and the platform lost some dogfighting ability from the agile lightweight prototypes. The legs were not good.

World Air Power Journal released an excellent article about the Northrop program from the initial development to the procurement and fielding, of the McDD F/A-18A. The journal is located somewhere around the house.

    _______

World Air Power Journal has quality information about a lot of military props and jets. Consider picking up a few past-edition journals that details one of your favorite platforms. Spend the coins and buy it used. The Brits are absolutely KRAZY about military aviation and they know how to release a great rag about props and jets !!!!!! The detail and info is off the charts.

During the mid-80's while in the Air Guard I was a volunteer tour guide, at DM AFB and gave the all day "Bone Yard" tour one day each month. 70% of the blue bus was filled with insane British aviation enthusiasts who were always the last to get back on the bus when we drove to different parts of the "Bone Yard." Some record tail #'s on all kinds of jets and overseas a few have no problem camping out at the end of the runway.

Jim- There is no F-17, only the YF-17. You are right about them changing primes, but one part of the deal was a large part of the F/A-18 was built by Northrop/NG. At one point, USAF was going to rename the F-22 the F/A-22, but too many enemies, including McCain, curtailed the program, so USAF went back to F-22, then F-22A.

The Navy had a good system for designating their aircraft before the Whiz Kids came along. You could tell who made the aircraft and what number it was in their sequence of that aircraft type. Of course it did lead to F4H-1s and F-110s both being Phantoms, but that was easy enough to remember. The Whiz Kids killed the Century Series, too, but USAF snuck in the F-117 because the program was so far behind the green door, nobody could change it before it was too late.

I love seeing these photos back in the day, I touched this one up using GIMP 2.10 (a Photoshop competitor) to restore those colors lost in photographic prints of the era.

Those "Indian Orange" flight suits were bright. Question about the flight jacket, is that MA1 issue? or the B15(Korea war)issue?

    Looks great.

I have four original USN flight suits (WW II - Vietnam War) with patches but those are all leather.

No clue. I assume this is circa 1958.

Those pre-nomex nylon flight jackets were green on one side and orange on the other. Not sure of the actual name. Orange flight suits were normally worn by golden arms in either service. Also by some ADC/NORAD pilots way up north if snow was on the ground.

    Both burned like a torch.
