Hey F-Chat, Working on a 1990 348TS rescue I picked up. I'm getting ready to do a full shakedown and during the repair of the oil pressure sending unit I pulled the oil filter. A Bosch 72147. I thought, well that's odd, so i looked it up. It's inexpensive and readily available as opposed to the OEM. I searched the site and nothing comes up. Looks like it was used on Jag V-12s It fits perfect and the oil pressure (now that i have readings) is right where it should be hot and cold. Does anyone see any reason NOT to use this part number filter again?
There are probably several reasons why it's really not as good as the stock 197654 oil filter (even though it fits and quasi-works): probably less filter media area probably has less total area of inlet holes probably no standpipe probably the anti-drainback valve not as well designed probably a (thinner) lower working pressure and burst pressure case probably doesn't have a spring-loaded, resettable bypass valve See this thread for the internal design details about 197654 (you'll have to click on the pictures to open them) https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/evaluation-of-purflux-oil-filter-ferrari-pn-197654-as-used-on-348-355-360-f50.357549 Please do cut that Bosch filter open and report your comparisons to 197654.
Thanks Steve, I dont have an OEM on hand to compare it to right now so this helps a lot. I will cut this one once I have a replacement and post it here.
I crossed referenced the Bosch part 72147 to a Mahle OC 59. Which shows on the website that it fits Ferrari Mondial 3.0/3.2/3.4T, 206, 208, 308, 328, 365, 400, 408, 412 and 512. The link list it’s specifications. https://catalog.mahle-aftermarket.com/eu/product.xhtml?eid=99 Image Unavailable, Please Login
So i did more cross referencing from the Bosch 72147 to a Purflux LS186. This “looks” exactly like the Genuine one, Ferrari part 197654, just without the Ferrari name. I might have to order one to have a look inside. This would be the best “apples to apples” comparison as it is the same manufacturer for the 348/355 of ours. https://www.sogefifilterdivision.com/catalogues/FO/scripts/cat_fich_filtre.php?zone=FR&catalogue=PFX&lang=GB&old_marque=ARO&searchref=LS186&ref_filtre=LS186&marque=FERRARI Image Unavailable, Please Login
The most latest engine oil filter for our cars is the 197654. It superseded the old part 191462/LS925 over a decade ago. There is no information that shows why the part number change, either an actual revision to the part itself or just an internal number change for some kind of reorganization of the parts department. There are many Purflux filters that “looks” like the 197654, just like this Ferrari part 289571, which is also for a Masarati and comes pre-packaged oily as this part gets pre-pressurized and sealed before shipping. It’s pretty safe to say to just stick with buying 197654 for now. Unless Purflux gives information that these parts can all cross reference to each other. https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/maserati/289571?id=264287 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Something must be wrong with that cross-reference -- Bosch 72147 must have a 1"-12tpi mounting thread if it fits a 348, but the Mahle OC 59 has a 3/4"-16tpi mounting thread (as does that list of F models Mondial, 308, 328 etc.).
The Bosch 72147, OC 59 and Purflux LS186 all have 3/4-16tpi thread. All of them did not list the 348 or the F355. I guess none of these are suppose to fit a 348/F355 if they take a 1”-12tpi thread... ApexxForza, check your thread size on both the filter and engine.
Great work Kokose7en! I'm going to look into this too. It would be nice if I could use the same one on my Mondial. Keeps one less inventory item off the shelf. Im gonna order a new one and cut up this old one and see what's what.
Bosch 72147 is suitable for Jaguars (XJ6, XJ12 etc., 70's to 90's, EBC9658) so, since the Jag thread is 1"-12, the said Bosch should have this thread and should fit the 348 though it probably has a bit larger outer diameter. I happen to have a few left-over filters (Unipart GFE317) from my ex Jaguar V12 so here's the comparison. The Unipart filter has 8 mm bigger OD but the seal diameter is the same. My mistake, the Bosch 72147 does indeed have a 1”-12tpi. I used WORLDPAC to input that Bosch part. It showed the OC 59.
Thank you to everyone that has looked into this and found so much information. I will work on this also. You guys are great. I will post what i find as soon as i get the results.
it seems that Bosch 72209WS is a premium version of Bosch 72147. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0099M6R4S https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/bosch,72147,oil+filter,5340
Because of the oil pressure and flow of that engine Ferrari had problems with the center stand pipe collapsing and restricting flow. Several revisions were made in the early years to prevent it. Did Bosch ever do that? There is a lot more to making an oil filter correct for a given application than threads and O rings.
