The record-breaking 23-race Formula One calendar released for 2021 seemed incredibly ambitious when it was announced in October, and now it appears that those fears are going to be borne out. Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) president Jean Todt has now admitted that the season is probably going to be rearranged. Actually, about half of it. Half of it is probably going to be rearranged.

The ImolaGP in the 2021 F1 calendar is expected to be announced tomorrow at 9 am. Italian reports say that it's going to be the second race in the calendar, so F1 would return to Europe immediately after the BahrainGP.

Formula 1 has announced the return of Imola to the 2021 calendar after being forced to postpone races in Australia and China, with Melbourne shifting to a November date slot.

F1 unveiled a 23-race calendar for 2021 in November that was due to start in Australia, but has been forced to make some early changes due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It emerged in recent weeks that Australia would not be able to go ahead on 21 March due to the ongoing travel restrictions, while the promoter of the Chinese Grand Prix revealed on Saturday it was seeking a date change.

F1 issued an updated version of the 2021 calendar on Tuesday morning, confirming Imola will host the second round of the season on 18 April.

The former host track of the San Marino Grand Prix staged its first F1 race in 14 years last November after being added to the heavily-revised, European-centric schedule.

The success of the event prompted Imola officials to seek a deal for 2021, with a gap being opened up on the provisional calendar after the planned race in Vietnam had to be abandoned.

Both Imola and Portimao were seeking to replace Vietnam, but the postponement of both Australia and China has opened up places for both tracks to join the 2021 schedule.

Although Portimao has not been announced by F1 yet, the track is expected to host a grand prix this year and take the slot vacated by Vietnam as the third round of the season.

This TBC slot now lies on 2 May, one week before the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Australia has been postponed until 21 November, with its addition to the calendar forcing a number of date changes for the closing stages of the season.

Brazil has been brought forward by one week to 7 November, creating a third triple-header on the calendar as it follows races in the United States and Mexico.

The inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix has been pushed back one week to 5 December, while the Abu Dhabi season finale will now take place on 12 December.

While F1 is working with the promoter of the China race to find a new date, it is understood this would only go ahead if another race is cancelled as the calendar would not rise as high as 24 races.

"Due to the ongoing travel restrictions in place the 2021 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place on its planned date," a statement from F1 reads.

"Discussions with the promoter and authorities in China are ongoing with the potential to reschedule the race later in the season if possible.

"With the scheduled date not being feasible for China, Imola will return to the Formula 1 calendar on the revised date of 18 April.

Formula 1’s three consecutive street races in May and June, including the Monaco Grand Prix, are set to be called off next month, according to a report.

Long-established Dutch magazine Formule1’s website reports that the prestigious Monte Carlo event, plus the grands prix in Azerbaijan and Canada, will be scrapped for the second consecutive year.

This is due to the ongoing global health pandemic and the uncertainty it continues to cause around the world in terms of planning.

For street races such as those in Monte Carlo, Baku and Montreal, organisation needs to begin months in advance and officials do not want to commit themselves to such plans if there is a significant doubt about the race taking place due to the pandemic.

Despite the roll-out of vaccines for COVID-19 which are now being administered in many countries, there remain too many question marks about whether life will return to normal in the first half of 2021.

Formule1’s report states that “Monaco (May 23), Azerbaijan (June 6) and Canada (June 13) will, insiders say, fall off the calendar just like last year. Announcement of that news is expected next month”.

They add that Canada has “closed its borders to foreigners for a while and has a very strict corona policy. On the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, just like in Monte Carlo and Baku, the construction of stands, paddock and hospitality must be started early. Last year, the race in Montreal was cancelled permanently in early April”.

    2021 CALENDAR UPDATE

Season starts in Bahrain 26-28 Mar
    Australia moves to 19-21 Nov
Imola returns 16-18 Apr; China discussions ongoing

But the report indicates that a contingency plan has already been formed. This would be to replace that particular trio of races with three of those that filled the breach last season, namely, in chronological order, Istanbul, Mugello and Nurburgring.

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/154629/monaco-organisers-insist-f1-race-is-going-ahead

Monaco Grand Prix organisers insist its Formula 1, Formula E and Historic GP events are all going ahead as planned, despite ongoing concerns over COVID-19 restrictions.

The Automobile Club de Monaco has responded to speculation in some sections of the media that its grand prix, currently scheduled for 23 May, could be cancelled, as was the case last year.

The next two races on the 2021 F1 calendar after Monaco - the Azerbaijan and Canadian GPs - have also been called into question.

Events at street or temporary venues with government backing are widely regarded as being more vulnerable to cancellation or postponement than races at traditional venues, in large part due to the lead time and resources required to ready the circuits.

Like Monaco, Baku is a full street circuit that requires weeks of preparation at considerable expense, and while Montreal is a semi-permanent venue, it does require extra work every year.

All promoters learned a lesson last year after the Australian GP was cancelled at the last minute and fans had to be refunded. This year's Albert Park race has already been moved from its regular March date to November.

The ACM is planning to run three events on the principality's streets in 2021, rather than the usual two, having reserved an extra slot for the Historic GP meeting that was cancelled last year.

Track action is due to start on 23 April with practice for the historic event, so the build-up has to commence around two weeks earlier than normal, with late February understood to be the starting point.

Like other countries around the world Monaco is subject to COVID-19 restrictions, with a negative test required for entry, and a 7pm curfew currently in place.

The club noted on Twitter: "Despite the latest rumours circulating on certain websites and social media, the ACM can confirm that the #MonacoGP will take place from 20-23 May 2021.

"The ACM also confirms the Grand Prix Monaco Historique (23-25 April 2021) and the Monaco E Prix (8 May 2021)."

The Formula 1 organisation has also denied that any further changes to the calendar are imminent.

A spokesperson noted: "We have set out the details of the revised 2021 calendar and there are no other changes. The suggestion street races will not take place [is] completely wrong."

Formula 1’s Imola race will be officially known as the ‘Made in Italy and Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix’ in 2021.

After staging the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last year, Imola is returning to the F1 calendar to host the second round of the revised 2021 season on 18 April, though a title had not been confirmed.

The governor of Emilia Romagna, Stefano Bonaccini, along with the Italian government’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, jointly announced the new title for F1’s return to Imola on Friday.
